AVIS V. BAKER

NORTON, VA – Avis V. Baker. 77, passed away Friday, May 29, 2015 at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Wise with her family at her side. She was born in Inman, Va. and was a homemaker and caregiver which she enjoyed and loved. Avis enjoyed life working with her flowers, traveling and playing bingo. She was a loving grandmother, sister and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence E. Baker, Sr.; her parents, Herbert L. Stipe, Sr. and Flora (Collins) Stipe; and several brothers and sisters.

Surviving are her son, Eddie Baker and his wife Karen of Norton, Va.; one grandson, Clayton E. Baker of Norton, Va.; two sisters, Joyce Anderson of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Nancy (Clyde) Vincer of Wise, Va.; two brothers, M. Ray Stipe (Beverly) of Louisville, Oh., Lee “Herbie” Stipe (Mary Ellen) of Big Stone Gap, Va.; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Sunday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 pm Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Donald Harding, Jr. officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 1 pm Monday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 12:30 pm Monday to travel in procession to the cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Wise for their care and compassion.


FORESTER COOKE

WISE, VA – Forester Cooke, 61, a lifelong resident of Wise County, passed away May 26, 2015, at his home, after a long illness.  Forester was an avid fisherman and hunter.  He was a loving son, father, husband, brother, and friend.  He supported his family for 25 years as an underground coal miner.  He was a son of Goldie Cooke and the late Gifford Cooke.

He leaves behind his wife, Sheila Faye Cooke, Wise, VA, a son, Brandon Cooke, Big Stone Gap, VA, two daughters:  Hope Cooke Stevenson, and Tonya Cooke Wiertz, both of Wise.  He leaves behind four stepchildren: Becky Bolling, Pound, VA, Chris Crabtree, Wise, VA, Joshua Crabtree, Coeburn, VA, and Michael Cross, Norton, VA; his sister, Margaret Cooke Wells, Norton, VA, three brothers:  Lacey Cooke, Abingdon, VA, James Cooke, Wise, VA, and John Paul Cooke, Norton, VA; eleven grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM Thursday at the Esserville Church.  A funeral service will be conducted at 6:00 PM in the church sanctuary, with Pastor Chris Crabtree officiating.  Family and friends will gather between 10 and 10:30 AM Friday at the church, where they then will travel in procession to the Huff-Brummitte Cemetery for burial.


E.T. STUART BEGLEY

BIG STONE GAP, VA - E.T. Stuart Begley was born on October 15, 1930 to the late Daniel Carter Begley and Martha Jane Shupe Begley in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. As a young man he attended Buffalo School.  He served in the United States Army in the Korean conflict.  He married Violet Wells in 1952.  Soon after they married, Stuart and Violet moved to Richmond. Va.  Stuart worked for the Ukrops on their farm for a time but he eventually retired from Reynolds Metals Company.  At that time, they returned to Big Stone Gap to the family’s old home place where he worked diligently to rebuild it one board at time with his own hands over a period of many years.  During this time he worked for Westmoreland Coal Company and Fraley’s, Inc. until his final retirement in October of 1994.  He then began to pursue his love for golf which began as a young man when he caddied at the Lonesome Pine Country Club.  Golf became his passion and his saving grace when he lost Violet to cancer in 2007.  He gardened, collected coins, and worked in his yard with a passion until his death on May 24, 2015.  

He was preceded in death by his siblings Jewel Carter Begley Boggs, Wanda Hagar Begley Moore, and Robert Ellis Begley.

He is survived by his sister Joyce Ann Begley Couch.  He is also survived by his children Patty Begley Nichols, Sandy Begley Lowery, and Sherry Begley Adams and her spouse J.D. and also his beloved son in-laws Charles Nichols and Jim Lowery.  His precious grandchildren and their families include: Jason Nichols and wife Tiffani and sons Caleb and Noah;  Jon Nichols and his wife Stacy and their children Sydnie, Drake, Keelie, Bentley, and Maverick; Olivia Lowery, Gavin Lowery, Camryn Lowery, Laurie Adams and her daughter Molly, Jessi Adams Powers and her husband Tanner, Lexie Adams and Torie Adams.  He also leaves behind a special friend Theda Durham, a host of golfing buddies, and many nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.  

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Hagy-Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, Virginia.  The funeral service will follow at 8 pm and is being conducted by Roger Sloce, Stuart’s beloved nephew.  Another beloved nephew, Buddy Hubbard, will assist with music for the service.   Pallbearers will be his grandsons.  A graveside service will be held at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 1pm.  Family and friends will gather at the funeral home between 12 and 12:30 to travel in processional to the cemetery for the interment service.


JANICE JENKINS GARDNER

NORTON, VA – Janis Jenkins Gardner, 67, died Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Johnson City Medical Center.  Janis was the widow of Danny Lee Gardner, and was also preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Ada Irene Nixon Jenkins, and her sister and brothers:  Sarah Dean, Paul Jenkins, and Tom Jenkins. 

She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Jennifer and Jeremy Smith, Norton; her five grandchildren:  Shealin Pruitt, Destiny Pruitt, Hope Pruitt, Christian Smith and Ethan Smith;  her sisters and brothers (and their spouse):  Margaret and Gary Wilson, Ted and Wanda Jenkins, Kay and Roy Bolling, Nancy and David Horne, Condie Eugene Jenkins, Mike and Diane Jenkins, Randy and Theresa Jenkins, and Mary Moore.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Sunday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 7PM in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Danny Mullins officiating.  Family and friends will gather between 10 and 10:30 AM Monday at the funeral home, where they will then depart in procession to the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton for burial.


SADIE COLEMAN

NORTON, VA – Sadie Alexander Coleman, 95, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Norton Community Hospital. She was a native of Russell County but made her home in Norton since 1940. She was a member of Blackman Chapel AME Zion Church in Norton and was a member of the Norton Kiwanis Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Sylvester Coleman; her brothers, Thomas Alexander, Eugene Alexander and Samuel Alexander; her sisters, Malessa Hicks, Emma Gordon, Virgie Cheatham and Causley Gravely.

Surviving are her son, Jay Richard Coleman and his wife Melanie of Norton, VA; five grandsons, Jazmond R. Coleman and his wife Maggie of Norton, Va., Jeremy R. Coleman of Coeburn, Va., Jay Richard Coleman, Jr. and his wife Shannon of Norton, Va., Jaycob Coleman of Norton, Va., Jayce R. Coleman of Norton, Va.; two great-grandsons, Jazmond Coleman, Jr. and Jaylen Coleman; a sister, Lucille Brown of Roanoke, Va., two brothers, Frank Alexander of Oakland, Ca. and James “Bay” Alexander of Lebanon, Va.; special nephew, Frank Gravely of Norton, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Justin Preston officiating. Burial will follow in the Russell Memorial Gardens in Lebanon, Va.

JOHN HAMILTON

NORTON, VA – John Carson Hamilton, 84, died Saturday, May 9, 2015, at his residence. John retired from the City of Norton 1996 after serving for 46 years in the water department. He attended the Stevens Church of God. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Bell Jackson Hamilton, an infant daughter, Julie Marie Hamilton; three brothers and six sisters.

He is survived by his sons, Larry Hamilton and his wife Nila of Wise, VA, Johney Hamilton and his wife Teresa of Norton, VA, Darrell Hamilton and his wife Sherry of Norton, VA; his daughters, Brenda Turner and her husband Ira of Norton, VA, Revona Bolling and her husband Tom of Coeburn, VA, Donna Phillips and her husband Lonnie of Norton, VA; 21 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; two brothers, Earl Hamilton and his wife Pauline of Norton, VA, Russell Hamilton and his wife Erma of Herndon, VA; a sister, Lena Browning of Norton, VA; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Sunday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Cliff Bowman officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home by 10:30 AM Monday to travel in procession to the cemetery.

ROBERT LYNN HALL

NORTON, VA – Robert Lynn Hall passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center with his wife by his side after a period of declining health. Robert was born in Norton, VA on Sept. 15, 1953. He lived in earlier years in Ohio but made his home in Norton. Robert worked for Westmoreland Coal Co., Paramont Mining & other companies in the mining industry for over 20 years. He was owner and operator of La-Mar Trucking for 20 years. Robert enjoyed his Harley Davidson motorcycles, Nascar Racing, horse racing at the Kentucky Derby with friends Sandy and Gary.

Robert loved deep sea fishing and several years boating & fishing at Douglas Lake with Brenda, Terry, children and family. In later years Robert enjoyed fishing with his brother, Ronnie, at the reservoir in Norton. Robert took pride in being a great mechanic working on his trucks and the many people he became acquainted with in the trucking industry. He was a born again Christian and attended Norton Church of God in the Ramsey section of Norton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas “Sid” and Ruble Chester Hall; sisters, Betty Sue, Jewell Ann; brothers, Donnie, Adam, Tom “T” and Ricky and his mother-in-law, Nadine Wells.

Robert is survived by his wife, Mar Lá Wells Hall; sisters, Annette Fields and her husband Bruce, Janie Hensley and her husband Jack all of Norton, VA; brothers, David Hall and his wife Reba of Bristol, VA, Ronnie Hall and his girlfriend Nella Sprigg of Norton, VA; father-in-law, Walter Wells, Jr.; special nieces, Julie, Sydney, Amy and Hope; special friends, Jeff Sturgill, Greg Adams, Jerry Gilliam and Kelly “Shag” Meade; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM Saturday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home  in Norton. A celebration of his life service will follow at 8:00 PM Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. David Boone and special singing with Darlene Moore and David Boone. A private burial will follow at a later date.

In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home toward funeral expenses.

The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors, dietician and housekeeping staff of Mountain View Regional Medical Center for the loving care during his brief illness. Special thanks to the pharmacist and staff at Lonesome Pine Economy Drug and Dr. Cohen and the nurses and staff at the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center.

GERALD MULLINS

NORTON, VA – Gerald Mullins, 84, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Asbury Place in Maryville, TN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia Mullins; his parents, Milton and Kate Mullins and a brother, Hoyt V. Mullins.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Laconte and Anthony Johnson, Edythe Ann Mullins and Larry Noel; two sons, Robert Mullins and John Mullins; two grandchildren, Ashley Mullins and David Mullins; one brother, Cecil Ray Mullins and his wife Betty Mullins; a sister, Betty M. Bolling and her husband Morgan; a sister-in-law, Lureva Sturgill Mullins; another sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lucie and George Geragathy; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Norton with Rector Robert Beauchamp officiating.
