MAY 2012 OBITUARIES


JANICE ELAINE MULLINS

WISE, VA - Janice Elaine Mullins, 66, died Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at her home in Wise.  Born in Jenkins, KY, she was a daughter of the late Crate and Mildred Shupe Mullins.  Janice lived in Southern Indiana for 18 years before moving to the Norton-Wise area more than 15 years ago. 

She is survived by her daughter Dendra D. Lambert and her husband, Thomas D. (Dan) Lambert, Jeffersonville, IN, her granddaughter, Casey Aubriana Lambert a sister, Landa C. Wright, Borden, IN, two brothers:  Randall P. Mullins, Thornton, KY, and William Lovell Mullins, Eolia, KY, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 1 PM Saturday in the funeral home chapel.  Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

LINDA LORRAINE ABSHER

NORTON, VA - Linda Lorraine Absher, 54, died Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Norton Community Hospital.  Born to the late Cossie and Jeanette Baker, she was a lifelong resident of the Norton area.  She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Denisha Powers, her fiance, Alton Powers, and her stepfather, Albert Wayne Sexton.

Linda is survived by her daughter, Nikki Moore and her husband Stephen, her brothers and sisters (and their spouses):   Don (Linda) Baker, Richard (Rita) Baker, Chad Baker, Wanda (Rex) Brickey, Brenda Baker, Phillip Baker, Randy (Pam) Baker, and Scott (Mariska) Baker; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2 PM Wednesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 2 PM in the funeral home chapel.  Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery.


CAROL WEAVER

APPALACHIA, VA – Carol Weaver, 68, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012 in Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Sara Calhoun Stratton; a brother, Monty Stratton; two sisters, Charlene Boggs and Mary Kring; and a son-in-law, Troy Keith.

She is survived by three daughters, Stacey Craiger of Laurel, MD, Lisa Keith of Appalachia, VA and Brandie Craiger of St. Petersburg, FL; a son, Roger Dale Craiger, Jr. of Cookeville, TN; one granddaughter; a sister, Jeannie Bolling of Defiance, OH; two brothers, Carson Stratton and Leon Stratton, both of Norton, VA; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Thursday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 PM Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Darrell Bolling officiating.


PATRICIA STURGILL

NORTON, VA – Patricia Ann Mathieson Sturgill, 53, went home to be with the Lord, her God and Savior Monday, May 21, 2012 at Johnson City Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her father, Glenn Mathieson; grandmothers, Mary Blackburn and Cecil Mathieson Taylor; and special canine friends, Founder, Herbie and Susie.

Surviving are her husband, Freddie Sturgill; mother, Jewell Mathieson; sisters, Joni Owens and her husband Earl and their son Justin, Glenna Hall and her husband Carroll; daughters, Misty Owens Motz and her husband Eric; Jasmine Kiara Sturgill; son Joshua Owens and partner Rob Hall; grandchildren, Michael Motz and Breanna Gabriel Motz; and special canine friends, Buford, Fred and Shorty. Special thanks to Cathy Sturgill for all her help during Patty’s illness and to friends and family and everyone who kept her in their prayers.

Memorial services will be conducted 1:00 PM Sunday at There Is Hope Full Gospel Church in Big Stone Gap, VA with Pastor John Dickenson officiating.


HAROLD MULLIS

NORTON, VA – Harold Richard “Snuffy” Mullis, 64, passed away after a long illness, Saturday, May 19, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family and friends. He was born in Kentucky but was a lifelong resident of Norton. He was a retired coal miner having worked for Paramont and Westmoreland Coal Companies and he was a member of the UMWA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mossie (Bull) Mullis, a brother, Jimmy Mullis; a sister-in-law, Diane Peace; a niece, Kylie Peace; and a brother-in-law, Ed McDonald.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Diets and daughter, Jennifer Mullis of the home, children of a previous marriage including daughters Merita and Shannon Cromer of Big Stone Gap, VA; Melissa and John Taylor of Coeburn, VA;  and a son, Charles “Chunky” Mullis and Danielle Kern of Norton, VA; five grandchildren, Justin Mullis, Malory Mullis, Kenidi Mullis, Shannon Cromer and Memphis Mullis; sisters, Faye and Bobby Kerns of Coeburn, VA, Mary and Lowell Cecil of Kentucky, Doris McDonald of Ohio; brothers, Jay and Sue Mullis of Kentucky, Charles “Bug” and Judy Mullis of Norton, VA, Rick and Belinda Mullis of North Carolina, Benny “Bag” Peace of Wise, VA; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Monday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 PM Monday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Larry Hammonds officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted 11:00 AM Tuesday at Laurel Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:30 AM Tuesday to travel in procession to the cemetery.


VONDA ROBBINS

NORTON, VA – Vonda Lee Robbins, 66, died Sunday, May 13, 2012 at her home following an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Hale and a sister, Paulette “Poxie” Hale Mullins. She retired as a Medical Office Manager, having worked with several medical practices over the years.  She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Robbins; a daughter, Melissa “Missy” Turner of Surfside Beach, S.C.; a grandson, Brandon Turner and a granddaughter, Makenzie Turner, both of Surfside Beach, S.C.; mother, Beulah Thompson Hale, of Norton, VA; sister, Teresa Morgan of Norton, VA; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Thursday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 PM Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Randy Sturgill and Rev. Stacey Potter officiating. Committal services will be conducted 1:00 PM Friday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home 12:30 PM Friday to travel in procession to the cemetery. 


GREGORY STRATTON

NORTON, VA - Gregory Stratton, 56, died Saturday, May 12, 2012 at his home in Norton, surrounded by his loving wife and family.  Gregory was a retired equipment operator for Humphreys’ Enterprises.  He loved his music and playing the guitar.  He enjoyed making music and dancing at the Country Cabin in Norton, Lays Hardware in Coeburn, and at the Hemp Hill Community Center in Neon, KY.  He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard Petit, and his mother and stepfather, Mable and Mack Thacker.

Surviving are his wife, Christine Stratton, his son and his fiancée, Caleb Stratton and Tashina Wolford, Caleb’s mother, Vickie Stratton, his brother, Monty Thacker and his wife, Devonne, Gate City, VA, and uncle, Homer Stratton and his wife, Juvada, his aunts, Patsy Lane and her husband, Samuel, Bessie Shupe and Cora House, a niece, a nephew and one great nephew.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Monday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Danny Mullins officiating.  The friends and family will gather Tuesday at 12:30 at the funeral home where they then will travel in procession to Laurel Grove Cemetery for committal and burial.


MAXIE MAE RAMEY

NORTON, VA - Maxie Mae Ramey, 73, of Gardner Hollow Road, Norton, died Wednesday, May 8, 2012 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center.  She was a daughter of the late Carl and Martha (Sexton) Collins, Sr., and was the widow of Tommy Ramey.  Together, with God, they finally stand.  She was a member of the Tacoma Holiness Christian Church of God for over 30 years.

She is survived by a daughter Pamela Branham (and her husband Charles), five sons:  Carl (Kim) Ramey, Jr., Tommy Ray (Brenda) Ramey, Jerry Wayne ( Joyce) Ramey, Charles Ivan “Winky” (Christy) Ramey, and David Wayne “Dell” (Barbara) Ramey, and another daughter-in-law, Debbie Dandy.  Her grandchildren are:  Bay, Bubble, Becky, Punkin, Rachel, C.J., Whitney, Dustin, Justin, B.J., Brian, Candice, Haley, Cody, Destiny, Tiffany, John, Bo, Carla, Amy, Adam, Brittany, Matthew, David, Timmy, Eddy, Josh, and Jimmy.  Also surviving are six sisters (and husbands):  Kay and Cleophas Mullins, Patsy and Junior Branham, Betty and Danny Sluss, Margie and Woody , Beulah and David Williams, and Bernice Cox; and six brothers (and wives):  Kermit and Lois Collins, Nelson and Patricia Collins, Herman and Mary Collins, “Buddy Boy” Collins, “Big Buddy” Collins, Terry and Mary Sexton, and Melvin Collins.  There are several great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and friends.  The family gratefully thanks her caregiver and friends, Angie and Keith Craiger.

The family will receive friends after 5 PM Thursday at the Tacoma Holiness Christian Church of God.  Funeral services will be at 2 PM Friday at the church, with the Reverend Joe Dearry and Pastor Mike Davis officiating.  Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton.  Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home of Norton is serving the Ramey family.


JAMES SENSABAUGH

NORTON, VA - James Wesley Sensabaugh, 71, died Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Sensabaugh Etter and a sister, Loretta Sensabaugh.

He is survived by three brothers, Glenwood Sensabaugh and his wife, Fredaof Norton, VA, John Etter of Norton, VA, Jerome Etter and his wife, Beverly of Norton, VA; two sisters, Vickie Sensabaugh of Norton, VA and Belva Henderson of Evansville, IN; special cousin, Renee Charles; special friend, Willie McCurdy; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 - 1:00 PM Wednesday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Services will be conducted 1:00 PM Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Joseph Comage officiating.


EDITH LUNSFORD

NORTON, VA – Edith Lunsford, 89, passed away May 3, 2012 in Lonesome Pine Hospital. She was born September 20, 1922 in Norton, Virginia, daughter of the late Brad and Alice Lunsford. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by stepfather, Roscoe Sturgill and a brother, Jimmy Ray Lunsford.  Edith loved cooking, sewing and quilting and her cats.  She was a member of the Laurel Grove Community Church where her son-in-law is pastor. She was a wonderful mother and will be missed very much.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Long and husband Robert D. Long of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Karen Sturgill and her husband Rev. Raymond Sturgill, Norton, VA; grandchildren, Todd Boatright, Amy Sturgill, April Sturgill, Autumn Freeman and husband Brian, Jordan Sturgill and wife Bree: great grandchildren, Abby, Sarah, Matthew, David, Madison, Lily, Scarlett Jessee, Alysha, Anna, Courtney, Emma, Chelsea, Noah and Kholoe; also surviving are three sister, Georgia Farmer, Newport News, VA, Ruth Ross, South Daytona, FL, Betsy Downer and husband Alden, West Boylston, MA;  a brother, Bradley Lunsford, Norton, VA; sister-in-law, Sandy Lunsford, Norton, VA; special nieces and nephews and family friends Richard and Judy Hughes.

The family will receive friends 5-7:00 PM, Monday, May 7th. at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 8th. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Robbie Fultz officiating.  Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery in Norton.


GLADYS GRIGSBY

NORTON, VA – Gladys Grigsby, 70, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012 in Holston Valley Hospital. She attended the Norton Christian Church. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, cooking and social networking and was very devoted to and loved her family. She cared for her community and worked for the Hope House and the Family Crisis Center in Norton.

She is survived by her husband, Wilmer Grigsby of Norton, VA; 2 sons, Darrell Grigsby and his wife, Jessica of Kingsport, TN, David Grigsby and his wife, Chrissie of Wise, VA; 4 daughters, Rita Grigsby Beeler and her husband, Scott of Big Stone Gap, VA, Shirley Owens and her husband, Teddy of Norton, VA, Carolyn Browning and her husband, David of Huntsville, AL, Heather Stone and her husband, Carl of Wise, VA; 14 grandchildren; 7 great granddchildren; a brother, Howard Tracy of KY: a sister, Alberta Hollon of IN; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Thursday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 PM Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jim Wells officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted 10:00 AM Friday at Laurel Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home 9:30 AM Friday to travel in procession to the cemetery.
