SHANNON HILL

NORTON, VA - Shannon D. Hill, 65, died Monday, February 28, 2011 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.  He was the son of the late Irvin and Mildred Gardner Hill, and was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Arnold Hill.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Surviving are his wife, Jennie Greear Hill, and a son, Gerald “Jerry” Hill and his wife Kelly, Laquey, MO,  two aunts,  and  several  special cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Wednesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will at 7 o’clock Wednesday in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Michael Hunsucker and the Rev. Tommy Mullins officiating.  Family and friends will gather at 10:30 AM Thursday at the funeral home where they will then travel in procession to the Hill Family Cemetery on Powell River Road for burial.

 


TONY DYE

NORTON, VA - Tony Glen “Perk” Dye, 62, died Saturday, February 19, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, VA.  Born in Dorchester, VA, he was a son of the late Robert Roy Dye and Grace Hall Dye.  Tony was a 1966 graduate of J.J. Kelly High School where he played both football and baseball for the Indians.  He was heavy equipment operator and mechanic for many years.  “Perk” was a founding member of the Warlords Motorcycle Club in Norton in 1974, and currently was Sergeant-at-Arms of the Southwest Virginia Chapter of the Pagan Nation.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Pettit Dye, and a sister, Mollie Stidham.

Surviving are his daughters and their husbands:  Tami and Scott Jordan, Wise, VA, and Vickie and Keith Wilhoit, Ashboro, NC; his brothers and their wives:  Tim and Kathy Dye, Pulaski, VA, and Terry and Verina Dye, Norton.  His grandchildren are Noah Cain Jordan and Joshua Wilson Wilhoit.  Also surviving is a special friend, Kathy Mullins.  There are several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 PM Thursday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Friday in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Allen Culbertson officiating.  Entombment will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.  Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home, 956 Park Avenue, Norton, VA is serving the Dye family.

 


BRENDA STIDHAM

NORTON, VA – Brenda Sue “Susie” Stidham, born August 15, 1950, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011, from this life into Eternal Life with God.  She was preceded in death by her father Charlie Tate, mother Bessie Jones Tate and brother Jacky Tate. 

Surviving are her husband of 45 l/2 years, Dayton Stidham; a daughter, Kim Perry; two grandchildren, Lleyton and Logan Perry, a sister, Rita Jo Beeler; several more family members, her Church family at Esserville Freewill Baptist Church and many friends.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 PM Friday, Feb. 18th at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home Chapel.  A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel, with senior Pastor Jim Smith and Pastor Travis Sturgill officiating.  Burial will follow in the Gray Cemetery on Guest River. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Esserville Freewill Baptist Church, 6513 Union Hall Road, Norton, VA  24273.  The family wants to thank everyone for their support and to Total Home Care Hospice for their care.


JAMES C. FAWBUSH

NORTON, VA - James C. Fawbush, 86, died Monday, February 14, 2011, in Johnson City Medical Center.  Born in Dorchester, Virginia, he was a son of the late Theopilus “O.P.” and Lillie Mae (Andrew) Fawbush.  He was a 1942 graduate of Norton “Norhi” High School and was a proud alumnus of University of Miami. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and former scout master.  Having been an accountant with Monroe B. Thrower and Associates, he retired as accountant with Glenn’s Finer Homes.  Preceding him in death were his wife, Anne Fields Fawbush in January 2008, his brothers, Ray and Tyler and sisters, Catherine Thompson and Jackie Vandeventer. 

He is survived by, sons, James H. “Jimmy” Fawbush of Norton, David Fawbush and wife Beth, Powell Valley, Joe Fawbush and wife Shelley of Norton, Jon Fawbush, Inver Groves Heights, MN; grandson, Daniel Ryan Fawbush of Powell Valley; a granddaughter, Morgan Brooke Fawbush, Norton; a step granddaughter, Jade Fultz, Norton, VA; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Thursday in the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home Chapel with a funeral service being conducted at 7:00 PM with Rev. Lee Kidd and Rev. John Ellington officiating.  Interment will be at 11:00 AM Friday in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.  Friends and family will meet at 10:30 AM Friday at the funeral home, to go in procession to the cemetery.


CATHERINE PORTERFIELD

 

NORTON, VA- Catherine Louise Coyle Porterfield departed this life on February 6, 2011 at her home in Norton, Virginia.  Born in Berkeley County, West Virginia in 1923, she was preceded in death by her mother and father, Cora Glenda and Guy Wilder Coyle, her husband Harmon Theodore Porterfield, her sister Frances Patton, and her brothers James and Donald Coyle.

She is survived by two children, Donna and David Porterfield, a daughter-in-law, Shirley Porterfield, a granddaughter, Jeanne Jennings, a grandson, Christopher Michael Everhart, a great grandson, Alex Jennings, a great-great grandson, Ryder Jennings, a sister, Ruby Subock, sisters-in-law, Thelma and Phyllis Coyle, brothers-in-law Dick Subock and Harry Patton, and many, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service, followed by visitation with the family, will be conducted on Wednesday, February 9 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Episcopal Church in Norton, Virginia.  Burial will follow at Willow Hill Moravian Church in Orchard Gap, Virginia at 3:30 PM on the same day.

NANCY SMITH

 

KERNERSVILLE, NC - Mrs. Nancy Arlene Smith, 70, of Kernersville, NC passed away on Tuesday, February 1, 2011.  She was born on November 19, 1940 to Martha and Arlin Stidham of the Powell Valley section of Norton, VA.  She was brave, strong, witty, so very funny, the best cook ever, and loved her grandbabies.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters, with whom she held near and dear to her heart; Herman, Vernus, Parkis, Junice, Joe, and Sybil Stidham, Hazel Bridges, Vivian Bedish, and Mary Osborne.

Grateful and forever touched for having shared in her life are her husband, Elmer Smith, Kernersville, NC; three daughters, Judy Smith of Norton, VA, Janet Laney (husband Gary) of Kernersville, NC., Jennifer Ritchie (husband Curtis) of Walkertown, NC.,  and son James Smith of Oklahoma City, OK.; grandchildren, Jonathan Smith and Amy Stanley of Virginia, Samantha Lam, Arlene Smith, Sarah Ritchie, and Eddie Ritchie of North Carolina;  great grandchildren, Reagan Smith of Virginia, Chloe Hopkins and Orrin Lam of North Carolina. Also surviving are two sister-in-laws, Betty and Louise Stidham and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, VA.  Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. 

Special thanks to her nephew Danny Stidham for sitting with her and keeping her happy, and her two special helpers, Heather Hopkins and Ada Blair for taking such good care of her.
