NORTON, VA – Darrell Lee VanWinkle, 54, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph VanWinkle and a brother, Randy VanWinkle.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cathy VanWinkle, Norton, VA; 2 daughters, Crystal VanWinkle, Norton, VA and her fiancé Rodney Holbrook, Victoria Whitt and her husband Travis, Norton, VA; 2 grandchildren, Presley and Peyton VanWinkle; his mother, Joan Hensley VanWinkle, Norton, VA, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a close circle of friends.
The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Saturday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 PM Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. John McCarroll and Rev. Jeff Reynolds officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at the Laurel Grove Cemetery. At the family’s request, memorial contributions may be made toward the anticipated funeral expenses in care of Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home, 956 Park Avenue, Norton, VA 24273.
ANNA RUTH COWDEN
NORTON, VA - Anna Ruth Cowden, 83, gained her angel wings as she passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, September 19, 2011 at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a Charter Member of Ramsey Freewill Baptist Church for more than 60 years where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She touched many lives in both her church work and with the Mountain Empire Older Citizens where she was an active participant for several years.
Anna Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Burchel Cowden, who died April 13, 2002; her parents Clarence and Della Absher; three brothers, Danny Absher, Ray Absher and Jerry Absher.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Jeannie Cowden and Ronnie and Billie Jean Cowden, all of Norton, VA; a daughter Shirley Stidham, Norton, VA; daughter and son-in-law Sue and Avery Hill, Norton, VA; daughter Lynn (Tim) Pritchard, Coeburn, VA; one granddaughter, Kayla (Ben) Harvey; seven grandsons, Brad Stidham, Milford (Pam) Stidham, Lee Martin Bowling, Aaron Cowden, Dusty (Michelle) Cowden, Alex Pritchard and Jaden Pritchard; eight great grandchildren; three brothers, Gene (Shirley) Absher, Melvin (Dolores) Absher, Darrell Absher, all of Norton, VA; five sisters, Loretta McCullough, Sandusky, OH, Betty White, Pembroke, GA, Barbara Gilley, Lyons, GA, Tammy Wells, Savannah, GA, and Dee Dee (Terry) Jones, Norton, VA; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Absher Mullins and Brenda Absher, both of Norton, VA; several nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday, September 22, 2011 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Benny Boles and Rev. Clifford Bevins officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
DELLA F. SHEPHERD
COEBURN, VA - Della F. Shepherd, 79, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2011 at Norton Community Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Kentucky to the late Alfred K. and Edna McFarland Brown, she was the widow of James Shepherd.
Mrs. Shepherd is survived by her children: Charlotte McConnell, Coeburn, VA, Rick Barnett, Delaware, Bill Barnette Monroeville, OH, Terry Barnett, Lexington, OH, and Tim Barnett, Coeburn; two sisters: Ruth Zinn and Ina Berry; 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews including: George R. Brown, Kellie Brown Applegate, Greg M. Brown and Gary N. Brown.
At Mrs. Shepherd’s request, her services will be conducted privately with burial following at Greenwood Cemetery in Coeburn.
Rose Marie Hayes
WISE, VA - Rose Marie Hayes, 53, died Friday, September 2, 2011 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton. Born to the late James and Carrie Turner Hayes, she was also preceded in death by sisters and brothers: Ginger Moore, Harvey Hayes, Paul Hayes, and Jeanette Hayes.
Surviving are her daughters and their husbands: Angie and John Lester, Norton, and Carrie and Brian Lund, Coeburn, VA; four grandchildren: Brittany Morgan Lester, Adrianna Jade Lund, Cody Lester, Ethan Chase Lund; her sisters: Sue Taylor, Barbara Mullins, Geraldine Phillips, Peggy Moss, and Tammy Newberry, all of Clintwood, VA, Janice Counts, Belfast, VA, and Kathy Hughes, Coeburn, VA; and her brothers: Doyt Hayes, Clintwood, Darrell Hayes, Kingsport, TN, and James Hayes, Delaware.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Monday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel. The family will have a private interment Tuesday.
