WISE, VA - Robert B. Basham, 53, departed this life Saturday,
March 31, 2012 at his home in Wise, Virginia after battling cancer, which he
fought to the end. Robert was born in
Bluefield, WV to William Marshall Basham and the late Lois Covill Basham. He was a retired Road Foreman of Engines for
Norfolk Southern Railroad, the third generation to serve, with 32 years of
service. Robert gave 110% to anything
that he did. While growing up and living
in West Virginia, he was very active in the Boy Scouts of America. As a Cub
Scout, he was a Webelos Scout and in the Order of the Arrow of Light. In Boy
Scouting he achieved Eagle Scout. He
remained active in scouting as an adult scout leader and was awarded the Silver
Beaver Adult Award for his service in many scouting programs and activities. Robert
was also commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Also preceding him in death was a brother, Marshall H. Basham.
Surviving are: his wife and son, Cheryl L.
Basham and Robert E. Basham of Wise, VA; his father and step-mother, William
and Betty Basham, his step brothers, Tim and Jim Smith, Charleston, WV, and
Chris Smith of California, a step sister, Janet Francis, Pearisburg, VA, and a
nephew William Evan Basham. His adoptive
brother and sister are Rick and Carol Wade of Wise, VA.

from 6-8 PM Monday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home, 956 Park Avenue,
Norton, VA. Graveside funeral services
will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap, VA, where
he will be laid to rest near his grandmother, Nell Covill. Tom Dickenson will be an honorary pallbearer,
with active pallbearers: Tim White, Bill
Lewis, Eric Jackson, Rick Wade, Rolla Richard Wade and Tom Kennedy. Family and friends will gather by 10:30 AM
Tuesday at the funeral home, then depart in procession to Glencoe
Cemetery.

NORTON, VA – Vernie Sue Church,
age 68, died Thursday, March 29, 2012 in Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center
in Kingsport, TN. She was a wonderful caregiver, homemaker and a very caring
parent. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Dewey Ray Church, and parents, the late Vessie and Tennie Irvin.
She is survived by daughters;
Gloria Sue Church, Blountville, TN, Gabriella Lynne Lane and husband Sam,
Norton, VA, Delila Michelle Hill and husband Brad of Coeburn, VA; sons, Dewey

NORTON, VA - John Rees Goodness
Jones, 55, died Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in
Wise. He was the son of the late Frank
Goodness and Eileen (Rees-Boughton) Brickey. John was a retired letter carrier
for the U.S. Postal Service and was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He is survived by his wife, Tracy
Scyphers Jones, his children: Dylan
Hunter of the home, Kristin Cox, Beckley, WV, and Damon Lane, Pound, VA; a
sister Charlotte Warner, Coeburn, VA, and three grandchildren.

NORTON, VA – Robert Clifton
Watlington, age 54, died Monday, March 26, 2012 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was a member of the Chestnut Grove Baptist
Church. He was preceded in death by his
mother Cora Lee Etter Watlington and a brother, Phillip Etter.

COEBURN, VA – Hoge I. “Bud”
Horne, 82, died Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical
Center in Mountain Home, TN. He was a retired mechanic having worked at Super
Service Garage in Norton. He was a Korean War veteran having served in the U.S.
Army.
He is survived by his wife,
Jeanette Wells Horne, Coeburn, VA; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Regius
Comstock, Montour Falls, NY; a granddaughter, Larissa “Toby” Comstock, Montour
Falls, NY; a grandson, Logan Comstock, Montour Falls, NY; half sisters, Clarinda
Morris and Shirley Anita Horne; half brothers, Bobby Horne and Earl Horne;
several nieces and nephews.

ROSALEE VAN WINKLE
NORTON, VA - Rosalee Van Winkle, 73, died Tuesday, March 20,
2012 at Norton Community Hospital. She
was the widow of Carlos Buford Van Winkle, and was also preceded in death by
her father, Hughie Campbell, Sr. Rosalee
was a retired LPN with over 30 years service at Norton Community Hospital.
She is survived by her sons and their spouses: Michael and
Janet Van Winkle, Mount Carmel, TN, and Greg and Donna Van Winkle, Bristol, TN,
her mother, Nell Nidiffer Campbell, Appalachia, VA; two sisters: Helen Wright,
Appalachia, VA and Phyllis Reece, Big Stone Gap, VA, and her brother, Hughie
Campbell, Jr., Morristown, TN. Her
grandchildren are Gregory (Cara) Van Winkle, Andrea (Clay) Taylor, Destiny Van
Winkle, Alexa Van Winkle, and Matthew Allen Van Winkle. Her great grandsons are: Caleb Van Winkle, Tyler Chase Van Winkle, and
Wesley Taylor

NORTON, VA – Della Burton
Caudill, 93, died Friday, March 9, 2012 at the home of her daughter in Wise,
VA. Della was the daughter of James and Betty Burton. She was also preceded in
death by her husband James Howard Caudill, her brothers and sisters, Leonard
Burton, Fred Burton, Virgil Burton, Delora Burton Gent, Maude Burton Caudill,
Naomi Burton Asher, Mary Edna Burton Slone, Evelyn Burton Stidham, Thelma Burton
Ray and Doris Burton Allen. Della was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and
great grandmother.

WISE, VA – Frances Watts, age 75,
passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at her residence. She was a retired nurse from Norton Community
Hospital with 18 years of service. She was a member of Lakeshore Community
Church in Abingdon, enjoyed her flower garden and avid music lover. She loved and was very devoted to her family.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; Nannie and Floyd Thompson, brother, Cecil Thompson, sisters, Nora
Barnum and Stella Collier.
She is survived by her husband Wayne
Watts; daughters, Sandra Orender, wife of the late Ron Orender of Wise, VA, Michelle Watts of Coeburn, VA and son, Kenneth
Leonard and wife Dianne of Columbia, PA; sisters, Gertrude Sybert of Big Stone
Gap, VA, Jean Cox of Texas, Evelyn Porter of NC, Marcella Bolling of Virginia

NORTON, VA – Shane Donley Roberson,
29, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012. He was a 2000 graduate of J.I. Burton High
School, a 2010 graduate of Mountain Empire Community College and was currently
attending Old Dominion University.
He is survived by his fiancée,
Amber Leeann Smith of Norton, VA; a son, Bryson Patrick Roberson of Norton, VA;
his mother, Karen Gail Roberson, Norton, VA; a brother, Ryan Andrew Roberson of
Norton, VA; grandmother, Barbara Lee Nelson, Norton, VA; grandfather, Robert Campbell

HAZEL DANIELS WATTS
WISE, VA - Hazel Ann Daniels Watts, 77, died
Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Norton Community Hospital following a long illness. She was retired as the office manager of
Daniels’ Plumbing and Heating in Norton, VA. Her family was the center of her
life, and her passion was flower gardening.
Hazel was a daughter of John and Myrtle Stidham Daniels and was also
preceded in death by her brothers and sisters:
Charlie Daniels, Jim Daniels, Hope Begley, Gladys Begley, and Mable
Daniels.
Surviving her are her husband of
57 years, James D. Watts, her daughter Rebecca (Kenneth) Wright, and her son,
Rick (Sally) Watts, all of Wise, VA. Her
brothers and sisters are: Tommy Daniels,
John Daniels, Evelyn Cassell, Norma Jean Wilson, and Millie Bentley. Her grandchildren include Victoria Bays,
Ashley Watts, Kendra Green, Autumn Wright, and Chad, Ricky and Chris
Sartin. Her great grandchildren
are: Tianna Gravely, Noah and Sally
Sartin, Kaden and Conner Green, and Eli Stanley.
Graveside funeral services will
be 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 7, at the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton, with the
Pastor Carrol Childress officiating.
Friends are asked to meet the family at the cemetery at the 2 o’clock
