FREDDY GERALD LAWSON, SR.

NORTON, VA – Freddy Gerald (Fred) Lawson, Sr., 90, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, at his home. He attended the First Church of God  and the Park Avenue Baptist Church in Norton. He was a WWII veteran having served in the U.S. Army. Fred worked 20 years for Norfolk and Western Railway and later retired from Ferrell Gas Company with 35 years of service. Fred never met a stranger and always enjoyed story telling.  He was the son of the late Ora Johnson Lawson and Sarah Helen Davidson Lawson. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Beatrice “Bea” Holbrook Lawson and a sister, Kate McClanahan.

He is survived by his son, Gerald Lawson and his wife Debbie of Norton, Va.; two granddaughters, Mary Beth Lawson Scott and her husband Adam of Richmond, Va., Allyson Stidham and her husband Brad of Christiansburg, Va.; a great granddaughter, Ava Beatrice Stidham of Christiansburg, Va.; two sisters, Kathleen “Kat” Bays of Wise, Va., Cora Lee Lauderback and her husband Klyne of Kingsport, Tn.; special cousins, Charlie Clay of Coeburn, Va. and Roy Jessee of Norton, Va.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 pm Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Gwen Owens officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016 at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, Va. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 11 am Saturday to travel in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Johnny Munsey, Roy Davidson, Roy Jessee, Bobby Cassell, Ronathan Boggs and Larry Dingus. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve “Chico” Couch, Jack Barker, Clifford Bates, Roger Combs, Larry Hamilton, Johnny Godsey and Ezra Dye.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Norton Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1267, Norton, VA 24273

The family would like to thank First Choice Home Health, Caris Healthcare and the Norton Rescue Squad for their service to Fred. A special thanks to Fred’s caregivers, Roger Hill, Virginia Rose, Michelle Mullins, Brenda Vanover, Brandy Clark, Melissa Brickey and Cindy Carter for their kind attention given to Fred. The family also wishes to thank Brittany Davis for her service as a housekeeper to Fred.


BOBBY DARRELL ANDERSON

NORTON, VA – Bobby Darrell Anderson, 58, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016 in Wise Va. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Wise, Va. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Commodore Anderson and two sisters, Priscilla Anderson and Anna Tate.

He is survived by his mother, Grace Anderson of Norton, Va.; a son, Aaron Collins of Wise, Va.; a daughter, Stephanie Anderson of Wise, Va.; four brothers, Harold Anderson and his wife Judy of Columbus, Oh., Charlie Anderson of Norton, Va., Richard Anderson and his wife Petina of Patrick Springs, Va., Jerry Anderson of Norton, Va.; three sisters, Betty Darnell of Jacksonville, Fla., Loretta Miles and her husband Randall of Norton, Va., Brenda Herald and her husband Jerry of Wise, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016, in the funeral home chapel with E.L. Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery.


VIRGINIA LOONEY

NORTON, VA – Virginia Estelle Carter Looney, 82, died Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton.  One of twelve children born to Forrest Carter and Lucy Jane Warlitner Carter, she was the widow of William Leon Looney. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Rose Cash.  Formerly of Covington, VA, Virginia moved to Norton, VA two years ago to be closer to her family.  She was a member of Grace Brethren Church in Selma, VA. 

Surviving her are her children:  Mary Cash and her husband, Buddy, Norton, VA, Billy Rose and Martha Downey, Covington, VA, Brandy McCarroll and her husband, John, Norton; her grandchildren:  Alisha Roberts, “Bo” Cash and Scott Tyger, Nicole Via, Elizabeth Cress, Natalie Cash, Jeremy Cash, Abagail Cash, Ian McCarroll, and Addison McCarroll; her great grandchildren:  Avery Payne, Zachary Payne, Alex Cress, Maya Roberts, Kyra Roberts, Aaron Via, Adriene Via, Elijah Peters,  and Joshua Peters.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 6 PM Thursday at the Trinity Life Center in Tacoma, VA.  A memorial service will be at 6 PM with the Reverend John McCarroll officiating.  Services will be held at 1 PM Saturday at Arritt Funeral Home in Covington, VA  Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home of Norton, VA and Arritt Funeral Home of Covington, VA are serving the Looney family.


REV. CONNIE RAY POTTER

NORTON, VA – Rev. Connie Ray Potter, 71, died Monday, August 22, 2016, at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Big Stone Gap, Va. He was an ordained minister and a member of God’s New Harvest Church in Big Stone Gap, Va. He retired from Paramont Coal Co. as a tipple operator. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Damron; father, Lyburn Potter; sister, Jeanette Sexton; and a brother, J.D. Baker

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shirley Potter; four sons, Shane and Jennifer Potter, Robert Potter, Bobby and Katherine Potter, all of Norton, Va, Mikey and Megan Potter of Coeburn, Va.; two daughters, Melanie Potter of the home, Tina and Stovey Anderson of Kingsport, Tn.; thirteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Joann Baker of Big Stone Gap, Va., Betty and Albert Snodgrass of Marion, Il., Peggy Peters of Norton, Va.; a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Wednesday, Aug 24, 2016, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Cliff Bowman officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery.

LINDA KAY GILLIAM

NORTON, VA – Linda Kay Gilliam, 64, died Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at her home, following an extended illness. A caring, kind hearted soul, she was a gracious friend to so many. Linda Kay was the owner and operator of the Office Advantage & Gift Shop in Norton. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Norton, and also attended the Norton Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Edith Rose Fields Shoop.

Surviving her are her husband, Ronald E. Gilliam, a son, Ronnie J. Gilliam, New York, NY, her father, Herman E. “Red” Shoop, Wise, VA, a brother, James L. Shoop and his wife, Anne, Marietta, GA, several nieces and nephews, and her special friends: Terria Abshire, Lisa Tackett, Nicole Spradlin, Cliff Bowman, and her cousin, Anita Jennings.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Friday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. A funeral service celebrating Lind Kay’s life will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Cliff Bowman and Pastor James Wells officiating. Family and friends will gather between 10:00 and 10:30 AM Saturday at the funeral home, where they will then travel in procession to the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for burial.

GARY WAYNE CARICO

WISE, VA – Gary Wayne “Pee Jib” Carico, 62, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, at his residence. He was born on June 10, 1954 in Scott County, VA to the late Alonza M. and Willie “Bill” Carico. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Gertrude H. Dorton; three brothers, Ronnie, Roger and Bill, Jr. and one nephew Dustin Carico.

He is survived by his wife, Goldora Dorton Carico of Wise, Va.; a brother, Ricky Carico of Gate City, Va.; Brother-in-law and his wife, Ralph and Betty Dorton of Norton, Va.; nephews “the boys”, Jason Dorton and Ryan Dorton of Norton, Va., Kevin Carico, Justin Carico of Gate City, Va.; nieces, Christie Gibson, Chelsey and Shannon Carico of Gate City, Va; special friend, Greg A. Adkins of Wise, Va.; and his furbaby, Lacy.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 pm Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Cliff Bowman officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11 am Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, at Laurel Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am Saturday to travel in procession the cemetery.
