GREGORY STAPLETON

NORTON, VA - Gregory Patrick Stapleton, 55, died Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton.  Greg was a son of the late John Ballard Stapleton and Ida Robbins Stapleton.  He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, JoDee Gibson and a great grandson, Xavior Hamilton.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Stapleton, his daughters Shanna Freeman, Pound, VA and Hope Maggard and her husband Jimmy, Wise, VA; his son, Jody Gibson, Wise, two step-sons:  Chris Fannin and Brandon Fannin, both of Norton; the mother of his children, Susie Gibson, his sister, Donna Gail Sturgill and husband Lester, Norton, his brothers:  Bobby Stapleton, Norton, Buck Robbins and his wife Nellie Ray, Big Stone Gap, Virginia, Ernie Stapleton and his wife, Ann, Norton, and Eddie Robbins and his wife, Brenda, Fort Blackmore, VA.  His grandchildren are:  Lekeisha Gibson, Sierra Gibson, Destiny Gibson, Chris Gibson, Madison Freeman, Alexis Gibson, Hannah Gibson; and his great grandchildren are Jaxxlynn and Paxxtonn Hamilton.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Darrell Bolling officiating.   Family and friends will gather between 10:00 and 10:30 AM Wednesday, where they then will travel in procession to the Jones Family Cemetery in the Needmore community for burial services.


DARRELL STURGILL

NORTON, VA - Darrell Edward Sturgill, 69, died Friday, January 22, 2016 at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport.  Darrell was a UMWA coal miner, retired from Westmoreland Coal Company and Cumberland River Coal.  He loved to hunt and fish, but, most of all, he loved his church family.  He was a member of the Deliverance Fellowship Church and also attended the Laurel Grove Community Church.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Jonas and Bessie (Hubbard) Sturgill, and a sister Linda Barnette.

Surviving are his wife, Glenda Sturgill, his children (and their spouses): Tammy (Edwin) Haney, Darrell (Lisa) Torrey, Rebecca Shook,  and Michael (Antoinette) Shook; his grandchildren:  John Shook, Chris Laurain, Stephen Shook, Emily Shook, Misty (Joe) Harriget, Alicia (Will) Lance, Megan (Kevin) Watkins, Darrell (Ashton) Torrey, Billy Torrey, and Jesse Torrey; 12 great grandchildren, his brothers and sisters:  Raymond (Karen) Sturgill, Denita Sturgill  (Jamie) Boggs, Gary Sturgill, and Wilma Holmes.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Michael Hunsucker officiating.   Family and friends will gather Wednesday by 10:30 AM at the funeral home, where they then will travel in procession to Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for committal and burial services.


ELLEN MORGAN

NORTON, VA - Ellen Nevesta Morgan, 91, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap following a long illness.  She was a daughter of Ardin and Maudie Hammonds.  She was preceded in death by her husband Andy Morgan and parents Ardin and Maudie Hammonds and grand daughters Angela Gailey, Melissa Lintz.

She is survived by her loving family Sandra Plaster (Robert), Patricia  Dean (Teddy), Roy Morgan (Connie), Ellen Ritchie, Andra Short (Gary). Fifteen Grandchildren, twenty-six  great grandchildren, and fifteen great great grandchildren; a special nephew, Tom Flowers and his wife Janice.

The family will receive friends from 12-1 PM Monday, January 25, at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 1 PM Monday in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend John McCarroll officiating. Burial will follow at the Laurel Grove Cemetery. 


VELMA CALLAWAY

NORTON, VA - Velma Edwards Callaway, 83, died Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Heritage Hall Big Stone Gap following a long illness.   A native of Sparta, NC, she was a daughter of Alvin and Etta (Brooks) Edwards.  Following her marriage, she and her husband, Howard, made their home in Norton, Virginia, where they operated the Royal Jewelers for many years.  Velma was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Norton.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, Clarence Callaway, and her daughter, Phyllis Ann Shell.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years,William Howard Callaway, her daughters:  Rosa Carpenter, Fredricksburg, VA, Carol Brummitte  and Jeanne Callaway, both of Norton; her grandchildren (and their spouses):  David (Amanda) Shell, Amy (Kevin) Stanley, Ashley (Doug) Vinci, Michelle (Floyd) Olinger, Jessica Carpenter Kidd, and Becky Carpenter; and several great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 PM Monday, January 25, at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 3 PM in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Jim Collie officiating.  Family and friends will gather at the funeral home Tuesday, January 26 by 1:30 PM.  They will then travel in procession to the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for committal services and burial.  Floral tributes are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Norton, PO Box 499, Norton, VA  24273.


NANCY FIELDS

NORTON, VA - Nancy Carlene Fields, 63, went to be with her LORD, Monday, January, 18, 2016 at her home.  A loving, caring person, she lived by and through her faith.  She was a constant witness for her LORD, and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.   She was a member of the Freedom of Worship Church.   A daughter of the late Carl “Dude” and Margaret (Yeary) Sexton, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Taylor.

She is survived by her husband Vester Fields, Jr., her sons, Tony  Fields and Tracy Fields, and his wife, Cheryl;  her grandchildren:  Dustin Fields, Austin Fields, Nathan Fields, Noah Fields, Ryleigh Scott and Brayden Lee; her brothers- and –sisters-in-law: Norma and Cecil Bennett, Trena and Emmett Greear, Betty Mullins, Connie VanWinkle, Bobby and Rita Fields, Darrell Absher; and several nieces, nephews and multiple friends that she loved so dearly.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Thursday, January 21, at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Robby Fultz and Dr. Tom Renfro officiating.  Family and friends will gather by 10:30 AM Friday at the funeral home where they will then travel in procession to the White Oak Gap Cemetery in the Thacker’s Branch community for burial.


BETTY YOUNG

BIG STONE GAP, VA – Betty Laverne Young, 65, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2015, at her residence. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her husband, Terrance Nevada Young; a son, Jason Noaks Young; two daughters, Alexis Young and Terran Young; a brother, Isiah Noaks, Jr. and a sister Wilma Hunter.

The family will receive friends from 11 am to 12 noon Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home, Norton, Va. A memorial service will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Leslie Lee officiating.


BARBARA FRANKS

WISE, VA - Barbara Faye (Short) Franks, 75, died Monday, January 11, 2016 at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, TN.  A daughter of the late Omer Short and Marjorie White Short, she was a retired CNA with Norton Community Hospital.  Barbara was a member of the Freedom of Worship Church, was a former president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the church and founder of the women’s ministry at the Freedom of Worship Church.  She was a compassionate, loving, caring Christian, who dedicated her life to volunteer work and the caring of others.

She is survived by her husband, William “Bill” Franks. Her daughter, Kelly Fultz and her husband, Robby Fultz, Norton, VA, her grandchildren (and their spouses):  Ashley (Scott) Addison, Norton, Andrew (Jessica) Fultz, and Alyssa Fultz, all of Norton, and  her great grandchildren, Carter and Lucas Addison; her sister Mary Ann Cassell and her husband, Bobby of Norton, and a nephew Mike Cassell of Norton.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be conducted at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Roger Jenkins officiating.  Family and friends will gather Wednesday morning by 10:30 AM where they will then travel in procession to the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for committal services in the cemetery mausoleum chapel, burial following.


SHONNAH KILGORE

COEBURN, VA - Shonnah Marie Kilgore, 29, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at Norton Community Hospital.

She is survived by her fiancé, Travis Duran Bolling of Coeburn, Va.; two daughters, Aleiyah Bolling and Loudon Bolling; her mother, Shannon Bates and her step father, Michael Collins of Norton, Va.; her father, Randall Kilgore of Wise, Va.; a brother, Derick Lee of Big Stone Gap, Va.; a twin sister, Shonta Kilgore of Norton, Va.; three half brothers, Jason Kilgore of Wise, Va., Derrick Kilgore of Norton, Va. and Randall Kilgore of Wise, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12-2 pm Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Saturday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery.
