LOUISE MARIE RAMEY

NORTON, VA - Louise Marie Ramey, 86, died Friday, February 26, 2016 at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia.  A daughter of the late Andrew and Laura (Robinson) Johnston, she was the widow of  Dan Ramey.  The last of her generation, she was also preceded in death by her brothers: Roy, Clyde, Isaac, Pearl, and Cecil Johnston; and her sisters:  Susie Mae Kennedy and Kathleen Thomas.  Marie was a member of the Trinity Life Center where she for many years was a joyful part of the choir.

She is survived by her daughter, Naomi Ramey Grubb and her husband, Steve, Roanoke, VA, Michael Ramey and his wife Agnes, Radford, VA, and Buford Ramey and his wife, Connie, Epworth, GA, and her grandchildren:  Danny Brooks, Melody Forbes, Michael Ramey, Jr., Jaime Brooks, and Debbie Sorrells.  There are several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 AM Tuesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will follow the visitation in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend John McCarroll officiating.  Burial will follow at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, Virginia.


EVELYN HENSLEY

NORTON, VA – Evelyn Crystal Hensley, 64, passed away Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016 at Norton Community Hospital. She was born Feb. 18, 1951 in Norton, Va. to the late John Hensley and Madge Hope Brummitte Hensley.

She is survived by her son, Alan Hensley (Patricia Bowen); grandsons, Drake Bowen and Ryan Hensley; a sister Marie Smith; nieces, April (Ricky) Keel, Amy (John) Webb, and Melanie (Ricky) Kennedy; nephews, Stacy Smith and Arthur Smith.

Services will be private.


GOLDIE COOKE

NORTON, VA – Goldie Brickey Cooke, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016 at Indian Path Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. She was a member of the Esserville Church. She was a daughter of the late John and Martha Brickey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gifford Lacey Cooke, a son, Forester Cooke and 8 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her daughter, Margaret (Jimmy) Wells of Norton, Va.; three sons, Lacey Cooke, Bristol, Tn., James (Sharon) Cooke of Wise, Va. and John Paul Cooke of Norton, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Brickey of Indiana; a sister, Pearl (Ked) Holbrook of Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 pm Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016 at the Esserville Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 at the church with Jim Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Huff-Brummitte Cemetery in Norton.

LORETTA WILLIAMS

WISE, VA – Loretta Lawson Williams, 87, passed away on Feb. 11, 2016 at Norton Community Hospital. She was born on Nov. 26, 1928 in Wise, Va., being the youngest of eight children of the late Fred Lee and Etta Fulton Lawson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray (Eleanor), Herbert (Ruby), Paul (Ruble “Jiggs”). Howard, Donald (Peggy), Ralph, Sr. (Elaine). She was also preceded in death by one sister, Jeanette (Clifton) Hayden, and several nephews and nieces.

Loretta is survived by her husband of 66 years, Milford Williams; one sister-in-law, Mary Baker; and loved by several nephews, nieces and many treasured friends including the loving family of the late Jack Redman. Jack and his wife Nancy, Milford and Loretta were married in a double wedding ceremony on August 19, 1950. Also included is a dear friend, Anita Jennings.

Loretta graduated from Wise High School in 1948. She had 37 years in the banking profession having worked the first nine years at the First National Bank in Wise, Va. and the remaining 28 years at Wachovia Bank International Department as a Letter of Credit Specialist at her retirement.

She enjoyed all types of music especially Gospel and the “Big Bands.” She and Milford sang as a duet for many years having started when they first met in the late 1940’s.

She was a member of the Norton Church of God, Norton, Va. for 66 years having served as pianist and a member of the choir and President of the Ladies Ministry. She was very active in the Ladies Ministry especially in selling Holiday Pecans for 17 years. She was often referred to as “The Nutty Lady.” She had made many friends throughout the years with the Pecan Project.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Monday, Feb. 15, 2016 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Freddie Powers, Rev. Cliff Bowman and Rev. Roger Barker officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11 am Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016 at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Va. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am Tuesday to travel in procession to the cemetery.

IMOGENE FIELDS

WISE, VA – Imogene Owens Fields, 88, died at the home of her daughter on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016.

She was a daughter of the late Robert Ezra and Vinie Ely Owens. She attended Gladeville Presbyterian Church in Wise.

Mrs. Fields was a Control Foreman with C&P Telephone Company, now Verizon, for the entire Southwest Virginia area served by C&P. Her promotion to Control Foreman was effective September 1, 1973. She was the first woman to hold this job in the area for C&P, which she held until her retirement December 30, 1983. She previously held the position of Service Supervisor in the Norton Business Office.

She was a former active member of Norton First Church of God, member of Wise First Church of God, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Mrs. Fields was an employee of Cumberland Collieries, Inc. in Norton as secretary to Manager/Operations from 1985-1990.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William “Hal” Fields, her sisters: Jeanette Owens Rimmer, Irene Owens St. Clair, and Polly Owens Rogers; and her nephew, Robert Ray Rogers.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda Fields Pangle and Bill of Wise, Va.; a son, Owen Fields of Asheville, NC; granddaughters, Ashley Pangle Chandler and her husband Jerred of Wise, Va., Lori Fields Harper and husband Noah of Blountville, TN; grandsons, Charles William Pangle, Jr. and wife Jennifer of Wise, Va., David A. Fields of Kingsport, Tn.; great grandchildren, Madison and Emma Chandler, Charles William Pangle, III, Michael Stapleton and Dawson Fields; nephews, Denny (Scarlette) St. Clair, Mike (Jane) Rimmer, Jeff Rimmer, Phil (Jill) Rogers; niece, Pat St. Clair Larsen. Lifelong friends include: Shirley Collier Borcherding, Gigi Pippin, Barbara Reed, Leola Wooten and Phyllis Still.

The family would like to give special thanks to her loving home health nurse, Mrs. Nancy Gentry and all the staff at Hospice & Palliative Care of Virginia.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, Va. A memorial service will follow at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend William C. Gipe and the Reverend Ben Murphy officiating.

DAVID ADKINS, SR.

GATE CITY, VA – David Allen Adkins, Sr., 54, died Friday, Jan 15, 2016 at his residence in Gate City, Va. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Collins Adkins.

He is survived a daughter, Missy Armistead of Norton, Va.; two sons, Brandon Adkins of Franklin, NC, David Allen Adkins, Jr. of Kentucky; 6 grandchildren; his father, Allen Adkins of Wise, Va.; a brother, Greg Adkins of Wise, Va.; two sisters, Donna Fowler, Indianapolis, Ind. And Linda Wymore of Portland, Or.

The family will receive friends from 12-2 PM Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday in the funeral home chapel.
