SAMUEL LACKEY

NORTON, VA - Samuel James Lackey, age 83, died Saturday, July 23, 2016, at home with his loving family by his side. He was born October 26, 1932 in Roanoke, VA and came to Norton in 1971 where he resided for the past 45 years. He started his career in communications with Western Electric for 17 1/2 years.  He worked for and retired from Bell Atlantic and was very active with the Telephone Pioneers. Sam served as a Scout Master in Roanoke in the late 1950's and later as a Scout Leader when his sons came of age.  He loved teaching the boys scouting skills such as camping, cooking, and pioneer skills. He enjoyed gardening, was an avid reader, and devoted friend, loving husband and father.

He served as corporal with the 11th Airborne in Korea in the 1950's.  He was proud to have been a Senior Parachutist and Red Hat Rigger. Flying out of Japan he was involved in aerial supply drops in Korea.  He had lifetime memberships in various associations, including the 11th and 82nd Airborne. Sam served as Commander of the Norton VFW 4301 for seven years.  He loved showing respect to his comrades.

He was proceeded in death by his son Robert Douglas Lackey, mother and father, Elsie and Hunter Lackey, sister Ethel Jackson, and brother William Lackey.

Sam is survived by his devoted wife, Joyce Snodgrass Lackey, two sons, Hunter and wife Teresa of Dendron, VA, and Vincent Lackey of Stuart, VA, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren who affectionately called him "Pa Sam", and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Hagy Fawbush Funeral Home, Norton, VA from 12 noon - 2:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Lee Kidd officiating. Military rites will be performed immediately following the funeral by Virginia National Guard Funeral Honors Team and local veterans groups.  The interment will be private.

CARL SMITH

NORTON, VA – Carl Lee Smith, 56, passed away at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center on Friday July 22, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his father, Johnny Lee Smith Sr. and sister Barbara Jean Smith.

Survivors include his mother Mary Elizabeth Smith; Brother Johnny Lee Smith Jr (Faye); sisters Juanita Reese (Collyer Michael), Shelby Shortt (Terry), Tonya Noel (Jerome), Willie Mae Smith. He has two sons, Marcus Jay McCray and Jiair Jaleel Osley. He also had a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 7 pm Monday, July 25, 2016, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Darrell Bolling officiating. Graveside committal service will be conducted at 11 am Tuesday July 26, 2016 at Laurel Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will gather by 10:30 am at the funeral home to travel in procession to the cemetery.


CHERYL S. ROOP

NORTON, VA - Cheryl S. Roop, age 67, recently passed away unexpectedly at her home in Surfside Beach, S.C.  Cheryl leaves behind her husband of thirty-six years, Terry L. Roop, of Surfside Beach, S.C.  Terry and Cheryl had been life-long residents of the City of Norton until retirement.  Also surviving are her son, Elijah Roop; a daughter, Melinda Roop; both of Norton, Virginia.  She also leaves behind a sister, Sue Rankin (Denny); a sister Wanda Walter, and a brother Dan Snyder, all of Staunton, Virginia.  Cheryl also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, friends, and other loved ones including her beloved Yorkie - Roscoe.

Cheryl worked as a special education teacher at John I. Burton High School for two decades.  She also worked as an occupational therapist at St. Mary’s Hospital and Wellmont Health Systems until she retired.  She served one term on the Norton City School Board and served on several other community boards as well.

Cheryl loved and dedicated her whole life to her family.  She loved the outdoors, loved to travel, was an avid reader, and truly enjoyed working crossword puzzles and other games.  She loved sports, enjoyed sewing, and needle-point. Cheryl will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Friday, July 22, 2016 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Saturday, July 23, 2016 in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

RICHARD HUGHES

WISE, VA - Richard Earl Hughes, 82, went home to be with his LORD, Monday, July 18, 2016 while at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.  A son of the late William “Bill” Hughes and Flora Horne Hughes, Richard was retired from the former Paramont Coal Company.  He was a lay leader at the Tacoma United Methodist Church, and was a volunteer with the Mountain Empire Older Citizens.  He was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers:  Glenna Hatfield, Mary Taylor, Gene Hughes, Charlie Hughes, and Dale Hughes. 

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Judy Adams Hughes, the love of his life, a great niece, Ciara Lynn Baker, his brothers:  Elmer (Mildred) Hughes, Wise, VA, Curtis (Monette) Hughes, Tacoma, VA, and Tom (Betty) Hughes, Arvonia, VA.  He also leaves many friends including:  Jimmy & Wilma Collins, Nancy & Robert Long, Eddie and Jeni Neeley, Donnie & Vickie Ratliff, his beloved friends at Paramont Coal Company and the Tacoma United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Wednesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be conducted at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend David Gilbert and the Reverend Rose Mincey officiating.  Family and friends will gather between 10-10:30 AM Thursday at the funeral home, where they will then travel in procession to the Laurel Grove Cemetery for graveside services and burial.

LANA KAY WILSON

NORTON, VA- Lana Kay Wilson, 71, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at Heritage Hall Health Care in Wise, Va. Kay, as she was known by her family and friends, was born on April 1, 1945 as the youngest of fourteen children born to the marriage of Robert Lee and Julia Elizabeth (Fulks) Wilson. She was a gentle soul who loved her family and friends and would do whatever she could to help someone. She was a Christian and loved the Lord. She had a special place in her heart for children and animals. She had some challenges in life but persevered to become a special and unique person. She touched the lives of many and will remain in the hearts of those who loved her. Kay loved Burton Raider Football and Elvis Presley. She was a member of the Church of God in Norton. She was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by four sisters, Hazel Nix of Miss., Anna Sturgill of Kingsport, Tn., Sarah Dotson of Johnson City, Tn., Bernice Adams and her husband Foister, of Wise, Va.; a brother, Timothy Lee Wilson of Nashville, Tn.; several nieces and nephews; with special recognition of Elaine Sturgill and Jeff Gardner.

The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6 pm Friday. July 15, 2016, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 6 pm Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Freddie Powers officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery.
