EVERETT SHERMAN

NORTON, VA -- Everett Lee Sherman, 87, died Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport, TN.  Mr. Sherman was retired machinist with the Ford Motor Company in Detroit, MI.  Everett and his wife, Margaret Thacker Sherman made their home in Norton, Virginia after their retirements.

A funeral service will be held at 1PM Sunday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.


SANDRA SUE OSBORNE

NORTON, VA – Sandra Sue Osborne, 66, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015 at her home after a long battle with cancer. Sandra was a graduate of Mountain Empire Community College and was a former dispatcher with the City of Norton with over 22 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charley Wheatley and Blanche Miller Wheatley, and a brother, Charles Edward Wheatley.

She is survived by her son, Christopher Osborne of Norton, Va.; two sisters, Christine Hamilton and Geraldine Wilson, both of Norton, Va.; a brother, Lewis F. Wheatley; two grandchildren, Michaela Osborne and Alex Osborne.

At Sandra’s request, private graveside services were conducted Thursday morning, Dec 24, 2015, at Laurel Grove Cemetery.


EMMA JEAN POLLY

NORTON, VA – Emma Jean Polly, 86, passed away Tuesday, December 22 2015, surrounded by her children. She was a daughter of the late Dhal Evans and Elva Sandridge Evans.  In addition to her parents, her husband Creed Polly and daughter, Barbara Shermer preceded her in death.

She enjoyed church, reading, shopping, and cooking, and cherished her time with family.  She was known for her quick wit, sharp mind, and generous spirit.

Emma was a long time member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Norton, and also was a member of the local cancer support group.  Through this group she established many lifelong friends.  To her children, she was lovingly referred to as “Mother” and by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she was “Mamaw.”

Emma is survived by her children:  Roy Polly and wife Jeanmarie, Dagsboro, DE, Brenda White and husband James, Capitola, CA, Marilyn Johnson and husband, Leland, Aptos, CA, Patrica Stinson and husband, Robbie, Wise, VA, Debbie Polly, Charleston, SC, Marie Muir and husband, John, Norton, VA, Lisa Hale and husband Ron, Roanoke, VA, Jane Farner and husband Monte, Richlands, WA, and Libby Arellano and husband Ernie, Clovis, CA.  Emma had 19 grandchildren:  Carol, Rick, Chrystal, Justin, Matthew, Rebecca, Robert, Victoria, Summer, Preston, Season, Michelle, Emma, Misty, Heather, Scott, Ian, Blake, and Hunter.  Additionally, she had 22 great grandchildren, and her pet poodle, “Elvis.”

The Polly family will receive friends from 4-7 PM Sunday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home, 956 Park Avenue NW, in Norton, VA. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Monday at 2:00 PM at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Norton. Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Emma’s request was for memorial contributions to be made to Saint Anthony Catholic Church or to the charity of one’s choice.


MARY ELIZABETH ADAMS

NORTON, VA – Mary Elizabeth Adams, 76, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015 at her residence surrounded by her family. She was a former teacher’s aide in the Wise County School System and later retired as Deputy Circuit Court Clerk under Gary Rakes and Jack Kennedy. She was a member of the First Apostolic Faith Church in Norton. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Elizabeth Blanton Owens; husband, Bobby R. Adams; a son, Timothy Ray Adams, Sr. and twelve brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Donna Sue and Eddie Noble of Norton, Va.; two sons and their wives, J.D. and Sherry Adams of Norton, Va., Sam and Cindy Adams of Big Stone Gap, Va.; grandchildren, April and Mike Addison, Tim Ray and Sundy Adams, Jr., Jacob and Daniel Messer, Rebekah and Jarathan Cook, Laurie, Alexandra and Torie Adams, Jessica and Tanner Powers, Abigail and Maggie Adams; great grandchildren, Peyton and Emma Addison, Savannah and Sofia Adams, Mollie Dale; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 pm Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jim Adams officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11 am Monday, Dec 28, 2015, at White Oak Gap Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am Monday to travel in procession to the cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia, P.O. Box 349, Norton, VA 24273.


RUTH A. PAYNE

NORTON, VA – Ruth A. Payne 75, died Saturday, December 19, 2015 at her home in Norton, surrounded by her family.  Ruth was the last of her generation which included 5 brothers and sisters born to Houston Pridemore Darnell and Anna Mae Wright Darnell.  She was widowed from her husband James Edward Payne.  A great grandson, Braidyn Williams also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Zella Williams and her husband, Tim, a granddaughter and her husband, Amber and Jacob Dotson, Norton, and grandsons:  T.J. Williams, Christopher Williams, and Matthew Williams.  Her great grandchildren are:  Blake and Cailynn Dotson, and Trey, Karson, Easton, Peyson, and Landon.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Monday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 7 PM Monday in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Robbie Fultz officiating.  Family and friends will gather at the funeral home between 10:00 – 10:30 AM Tuesday, where they then will travel in procession to the White Oak Gap Cemetery for graveside services and burial.


ROY HENRY STEWART, JR.

NORTON, VA – Roy Henry Stewart, Jr., 58, died Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center.  A lifelong resident of the Norton area, he was a son of the late Roy H. Stewart, Sr. and Irene Wells Stewart.  Roy was a member of the Esserville Church and had previously been actively involved in its food bank ministry.

In addition to his mother, Irene, he is survived by his brother James Stewart and his wife, Michelle, a niece and nephew, Nikki Jones and Justin Stewart, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Saturday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Senior Pastor Jim Smith officiating.  Family and friends will gather by 12:30 PM Sunday at the funeral home, from where they will travel in procession to the Highland Cemetery in Norton for committal services and burial.
