ELIZABETH STALLARD

POWELL VALLEY, VA - Elizabeth Stallard died December 8, 2019, at age 96, surviving her beloved husband Addison by just over six months.

Elizabeth, lovingly known as “Bubby” to her children, grandchildren, many of their friends and many neighbors, was the firstborn daughter of Marson and Ruth (Wallace) Hall. The Hall family moved from Norton to rural Lee County when she was a small child, and the impact of the family’s peaceful rural life in what was known as “Cattown,” near Jonesville, impressed her so that “home” remained Lee County the rest of her life. The family moved to Powell Valley when Elizabeth was 14 years old and at that age she met new neighbor Addison, with whom she later enjoyed some 78 years of marriage and life in Powell Valley.

After graduating from East Stone Gap High School in 1940 she worked at Norton Coal Company. Following marriage she stayed at home as children came, but when all were in school she returned to work in Norton, at Lively’s Newsstand and at Wise County Credit Bureau where she was manager. Later she joined Addison in running the Nationwide Insurance agency.

In retirement she and Addison enjoyed some 35 years of leisurely drives, mostly to Lee County, watching to see the first dandelion of spring, walks to identify wildflowers, bird-watching, flower and vegetable gardening, and enjoying their property, Idyll Acres. She and Addison shared a strong love for music, and she played piano at her church for many years. She also loved crossword puzzles and cross-stitchery.

She is survived by daughters Sharon Daniels of Powell Valley, and Kay Johnson of Wytheville; son Jim Stallard and wife Patty of Wytheville; brother Jim Hall of Kingsport, Tenn.; special family friend John Gilly of Powell Valley, and cherished neighbors. Elizabeth and Addison had nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, most of whom survive her.

In addition to Addison and her parents, she was preceded in death by daughter Patricia Grant; sisters Helen Adams and Dorothy Witt; granddaughters Thomasa Clifton and Tanya Adams; great-grandson Jonathan Parker.

In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to support the Emergency Fuel Fund for the Elderly at Mountain Empire Older Citizens, or undertake acts of kindness for friends and neighbors.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. The service will be conducted at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jim Collie officiating. Burial in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens will be Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 11 a.m. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am to travel in procession to the cemetery.
