FREDERICK ALEXANDER

NORTON, VA – On Friday, September 6, 2019, The Lord called home Frederick Dale Alexander. He was born Thanksgiving Day November 26, 1950 in Anderson, Indiana to the late Georgia Morgan, and Dale Alexander. It was thought by his mother that she had a bad case of "indigestion" but, he was born later that day.

In his younger years, he served as a Military Police Officer of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He also earned several awards and was considered an Expert Marksmen of the M-14 rifle and Marksmen of an M-16 rifle. During his career after the military the majority was spent in the working in the Hotel industry.

 Mr. Alexander enjoyed all things Sci-fi, watched Soap Operas, wrestling and NCIS. He read comic books and painted on occasion. He found SW Virginia as his home and visited many of the local businesses. He frequented Romano's, Arby's, Sonic, Dairy Queen, Shamrock, Doughmakers, CVS and Murphy's USA. He relished in going to the movies at Norton Cinema and spending time outdoors.

He is survived by his only daughter Fallon Nicole Fox and Son-in-law David Joseph Fox. Grandchildren: Ava, Kaelyn, Dominic and Desmond Fox. Sisters: Deanna Salg, Diana Sanchez, and Shannon Stanek (husband, Jamie) Brothers: Steven Alexander and Michael "Dana" Alexander (also in heaven), Nieces: Angela Salg (partner, Seana) and Ellie Stanek. Nephews: Tommy Sanchez, (ex-wife, Pamela, partner Rebecca) Michael Alexander, (wife, Serena) Jaison Sanchez, John Salg (wife, Cara) and Robby Stanek. And several cousins and relatives as well.

Mr. Alexander did not suffer but drifted peacefully in his sleep. He was deeply loved by his family, (especially his daughter) his friends, and the community. Mr. Alexander privately donated to various charities including, Wounded Warrior project, Disabled veterans, The Suicide prevention line and many more. His passing was sudden but, all he truly hoped for is that his family, friends, and the community to be content in this world. In his own true fashion, in the words of one of his favorite characters on the Star Trek TV series....... Live long and prosper!!!

Military graveside rites will be conducted at 10:45 am Friday, September 20, 2019 at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, TN. In lieu of sending flowers the funeral home will be taking donations for last minute funeral expenses. Local memorial is TBA. Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home of Norton is serving the Alexander family.

JACK OWENS

NORTON, VA – Jack P. Owens, 96, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tn. from injuries sustained in a lawn mower accident. He was a U.S. Army Veteran during WWII serving in Europe and the Philippines. He was a member of the Wilson Chapel Church in the Needmore community for many years. Jack loved singing and was involved with The Guiding Light Quartet, The Revelators, The Highland Gospelaires and anyone at church willing to sing. He loved golfing with Benny Boles and Albert Elkins. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 75 years, Eva Mae Robbins Owens, his parents, Jim and Martha Owens; his sisters, Agnes, Beatrice and Mildred; his brothers, Percy and Hagamon.

Jack is survived by his two daughters, Jackie (Delbert) Sturgill and Judy (Jim) Sturgill; four grandchildren, Lisa (Randy) Lawson, Tim Sturgill, Lori Crisp and Cindy (Jeff) Elkins; eight great grandchildren, Brooke, Landon, Reagan, Destinee, Jazmin, Miracle, Mary Paige and Allison; several nieces and nephews and a very special caregiver, Janice Cantrell.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Randy Sturgill, Rev. Benny Boles and Rev. Larry Hammonds officiating. Military entombment rites will be conducted by the Gate City National Guard Funeral Honors Team and local veterans groups at 11 am Friday, September 20, 2019, at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Family and friends will gather by 10:30 am Friday at the funeral home to travel in procession to the cemetery.

ELIZABETH ANN CARTER

NORTON, VA – Elizabeth Ann Carter, 76, died Monday evening, September 17, 2019, at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Wise, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Lee Carter, Sr. and her parents, William Hall, Jr. and Ruth Trigg Hall. She was an LPN having worked in the local nursing homes.

Surviving are her son, Danny Lee Carter, Jr. and his wife Judy of Carlsbad, NM;  a grandson, Danny Lee “Trey” Carter, III (Valerie) of Coeburn, Va., a granddaughter, Dakota Elizabeth (Mark) Anderson of Radford, Va; four sisters, Nancy Linghardt and her husband Bill of Florida, Mary Linda Hall of Pulaski, Va., Regina Williams and her husband Jerry of Hillsville, Va. and Debbie McCaffery and her husband Walt of Pulaski, Va.; her step grandchildren, Michael Mata, Paula Mata, Ashley Mata and Mathew Mata; three step great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 12-1 pm Friday, Sept. 20, 2019, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Greg Sergent officiating. Burial will follow in the Hensley-Addington Cemetery.

JUNIOR RAY HERRON

NORTON, VA - Junior Ray Herron, 92, went to be with his LORD Saturday, September 14, 2019 at his home. He worked for Bullion Hollow Coal Company for 33 years. He was an avid sports fan for many years. His favorite football team was the Washington Redskins. He also loved the game of pool, played often at Tom’s pool room and was quite good at one time. He enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had a heart of gold.

He was a son of the late William McKinley Herron and Rosa Caudill Herron, and was the widower of Shirley Brickey Herron.  Junior was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict in the early 1950’s, and was a retired coal miner.  He was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Neal Stallard, and his brothers and sisters:  Clyde Herron, Harvey Herron, Paul Herron, Ann Herron Gilliam, Michael Herron, and Donna and Donald Herron.

He is survived by his children:  Randall D. Herron and Debra Mullins, both of Norton, VA, Glenda Stallard and her husband Perry and Johnny Herron, all of Pound, VA; his sisters, Goldie Burton, Ellen Clark, Margie Wyatt, and Sue Hopkins. His grandchildren are Rachael, Matthew, Bill, Jonathan, Kristina, Johnny, Jr., Brad and Cameron; his great grandchildren include Chloee, Kayla, Kasey, Alexander, Cayden, Neal, Brinleigh, Maxwell and Amara.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Wednesday. September 18, 2019 at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  His funeral service will be at 7 PM Wednesday in the funeral home chapel, with the Pastor Scott Gillenwater officiating.  His burial, with military honors will be at 11 AM Thursday at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton.  Family and friends will meet by 10:30 AM Thursday at the funeral home, where they then will travel in procession to the Laurel Grove Cemetery for military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Honors Team and local veterans service organizations.

HERBERT STUMP

WISE, VA - Herbert Howze Stump, 57, passed away suddenly Tuesday, September 10, 2019 of an apparent heart attack at Mountain View Regional Hospital in Norton, Virginia.  “Herb” was born Feb. 2, 1962 in Norton, Virginia.  He was a Christ believer who had a kind soul and heart, was full of life and laughter; he always had a smile and a joke to tell.  Herb was employed as a food manager with Food City in Coeburn.  His mother, Joyce Howze Stump, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his life companion, Dawn Miller of the home in Wise, VA, his father, Joseph Stump, Jr. and his wife, Anna of Knoxville, TN, his sister, Patricia Stump Mays, Norton, VA, his brother Joseph Stump III, Boling Brook, IL, and other uncles, aunts and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1:30 PM Friday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, VA.  His graveside funeral service will be at 2 PM Friday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, VA.  Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home, 956 Park Ave. NW, Norton, VA  24273 is serving the Stump family.

DORIS ESTEP SMITH

COEBURN, VA - Doris Ann Estep Smith, 78, died Sunday, September 1, 2019 at Norton Community Hospital.  Doris was a daughter of the late Earl and Mazella Baldwin Estep.  She was preceded in death by a son Brian Ramey and a sister, Norma Lee McElroy.

Surviving are her loving husband of 43 years, Roy Smith and her children (and their spouses):  Kevin (Sherry) Ramey, Blountville, TN, April (Michael) Amthor,  Coeburn, VA, Paul (Whitley) Smith, Appalachia, VA, Melissa (Roger) Gentry, Wise, VA; two brothers, Jerry Estep, St. Paul, VA and Danny Estep, Coeburn, VA; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Wednesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Her funeral service will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Pastors David and Carolyn DuVal officiating.  Family and friends will meet by 10:30 AM Thursday at the funeral home, where they will then travel in procession to Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton for burial.

NANCY DARNELL

NORTON, VA – Nancy Tate Darnell, 83, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother died Sunday, September 1, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center. She attended Marvin’s Chapel Methodist Church in Johnson City, Tn. She retired from Alltel with 27 years of service. She was a daughter of the late Wayne and Helen Absher Tate. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Alfred Lee Tate, her brothers, Jim Tate, Gerald Tate and Bobby Tate, and a sister, Deanna Tate.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Howard Darnell of Johnson City, Tn.; her daughter, Cheryl Darnell and her husband, Gary of Dryden, Va.; grandchildren, Cory Darnell and his wife, Victoria of Big Stone Gap, Va., Dawn Roller and her husband Brandon of Bristol, Tn; great grandson, Tate Roller; her brothers, Franklin Tate and Gary Tate both of Norton, Va., Mike Tate and his wife Karen of Jonesville, Va.; her sister, Sandra Rose and her husband Dallas of Knoxville, Tn.; sisters-in-law, Henrietta Tate of Huntsville, Ala. and Margaret Adams of Norton, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

Nancy was an avid bowler and devoted military spouse. She loved watching Perry Mason and was a fervent reader.  She spent her years devoted to her family and spending as much time as possible with them.  Her grace and class will be forever unparalleled. 

Family and friends will gather by 1:30 pm Wednesday, September 4, 2019, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton to travel in procession to Laurel Grove Cemetery where graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm with Rev. Robert Fultz, Jr. officiating.

BENNY EDWARD WELLS, SR.

NORTON, VA - Benny Edward Wells, Sr., 75, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport, TN.  He was a retired heavy equipment mechanic in the coal industry and attended the Guest River Pentecostal Church before his sickness.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Brummitte Wells, and his parents, Arnold and Madeline Brickey Wells. 

Benny is survived by his sons (and their wives):  Benny (Kristy)Wells, Jr., Scotty Wells, and Ricky (Susannah) Wells; his three grandsons:  Hunter Wells, Abingdon, VA, Aidan Wells and Connor Wells of Norton, VA; his two brothers, Bobby Wells (Faye Robinette), Wise, VA, and Tommy Wells (Doris),Kingsport, TN, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Monday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  His funeral service will be at 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Darrell Bolling officiating.  Friends and family will gather by 10:30 AM Tuesday at the funeral home, where they will then depart to Laurel Grove Cemetery for a graveside service and burial.

CARL WILLIAM LAWSON

WISE, VA - Carl William “Dink” Lawson, 63, died Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Norton Community Hospital.  Dink was retired from the Virginia Dept. of Transportation.  He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Lawson, and is survived by his partner of 25 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Collins, his mother, Faye Sword Lawson, his children:  Rodney Hamilton, Big Stone Gap, VA, David Sturgill, Saltville, VA,  Sara Lawson and Jamie Lawson, both of Kingsport, TN;  and additional family, Alecia Miller, Chris Collins, and Danny Collins; his sisters, Kaye Lawson Collier, Jasper, GA, and Carlotta Lawson Wells of Norton; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dink’s wishes included no formal funeral or memorial service.
