BRENDA CARROLL

NORTON, VA - Brenda Ann Carroll, 59, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN. She was a graduate of Mountain Empire Community College nursing program and a former Registered Nurse.  She was preceded in death by her father, David Leighton Berry, her grandparents, William and Nancy Spiva, and a special aunt, Kathleen Malone.

Brenda is survived by her husband, John William Carroll, her mother, Betty Ruth Jackson, her children (and their spouses):  Shane Sandidge (Carolyn), Krystal Tignor (Bryan), Sheena Carroll (Hunter McNew), and Cassie Gouge (her ”special son”, Jonah); her grandchildren:  Seth Tignor, Devin Tignor, Strider Sandidge, Valorie Sandidge, and newborn granddaughter, Jaelynn Ann Marie Gouge; her sisters and brothers:  Linda Jones, David Berry, William Berry, and Mary Bailey, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The graveside funeral service for Brenda Carroll will be at 2 PM Sunday at the White Oak Gap Cemetery near the Thacker’s Branch community of Norton, with Pastor Doyle Gouge officiating.  Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home of Norton is serving the Carroll family.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to all of the nursing staff at Johnson City Medical Center for their care of Brenda.


BILL BENTLEY

NORTON, VA – Bill Bentley, 87, died Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Nova Healthcare and Rehab in Weber City, Va. He was a member of the Freedom of Worship Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Wilson and Margie Tackett Bentley, his brothers, James Bentley, Arville Bentley, Junior Bentley and Garland Bentley; his sisters, Marie Bentley, Beatrice Bentley, Mattie Diets and Mandy Price.

He is survived by his two sons, Randy Bentley of Norton, Va. and Brian Bentley and his wife Heather of Jonesville, Va.; granddaughters, Cassie Justice and her husband Ryan of Rogersville, Tn. and Ciara Bentley of Jonesville, Va.; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a special cousin Sandy Moore and special friends, Edward (Cadillac) Boggs and Fred Necessary.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Nova Healthcare and Rehab for their special care given to Bill.

The family will receive friends from Thursday, October 24, 2019, form 3:30 – 5:00 pm at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. A memorial service will be planned later.


FRED T. BALDWIN

NORTON, VA – Fred T. Baldwin, 89, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019, at the home of his daughter in Liberty, SC. He was a resident of Wise County before moving here from Ohio after retiring from Ford Motor Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served from January 1951 to January 1955. He was a member of the Keith Maggard VFW Post 4301 in Norton. He was the last surviving child of eight children to James Monroe and Ollie McCoy Baldwin. He was a member of the First Church of God in Norton and dearly loved the Lord, his family and his country. In addition to his parents and his siblings, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Wells Baldwin.

He is survived by his daughter, Mitzi Greene and her husband Charles of Liberty, S.C.; two grandchildren, Megan Williams and her husband Seth of Atlanta, Ga., Bethany Whitlock and her husband Jarred of Kensington, Md.; two great grandchildren, Oliver Seth Williams and Hazel Annie Williams both of Atlanta, Ga.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm Saturday, October 26, 2019, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Adrian Dale officiating. Graveside military rites will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton conducted by the US Air Force Honor Guard and local veterans groups.

PEARL MARIE SMITH

NORTON, VA - Pearl Marie Smith, 65, died Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN, surrounded by her children and family.  Pearl was born March 19, 1954 to John and Madge Brummitt Hensley.  She had worked in the Center of Advancement at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise for over twenty years. 

Surviving Pearl are her children:  Stacey Marcus Smith, April Keel, Amy Webb, Melanie Smith and Arthur Smith; and her eight grandchildren, one which is to be soon born.

It was Mrs. Smith’s wishes for her funeral to be private. 

 Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home of Norton is serving the Smith family.


PEGGY STURGILL

WISE, VA – Peggy Tomko Sturgill, 85, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, October 14, 2019, from Heritage Hall Healthcare in Wise, Va. with her family by her side. She was a nurse for over 30 years having worked at St. Mary’s Hospital and retiring from Norton Community Hospital. She was a member of the Spirit of Life Fellowship Church in Wise, Va. She loved her Lord, her children, her grandchildren and her church family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Steve Tomko and Nora Holbrook Tomko; her sisters, Margaret Miller, Dorothy Bowman, Lila Fleenor, and Bonnie Gilliam; and her brothers, Danny Tomko, Billy Tomko and Howard Tomko.

She is survived by two sons, Brent Sturgill and his wife Rhonda, Robin (Hoss) Sturgill and his wife Elaine all of Wise, Va.; a daughter, Cindy Cheek and her husband Kenny of Wise, Va.; four grandsons, Zak Sturgill, Andrew Cheek, Jared Sturgill and Cole Sturgill all of Wise, Va.; a sister, Janie Tiller of Wise, Va.; several nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at Spirit of Life Fellowship Church in Wise, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 pm in the church with Pastor Robin Sturgill officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 2 pm Thursday, October 17, 2019, at the Wise Cemetery. Family and friends will gather at the church by 1:30 pm to travel in procession to the cemetery.


ANNE WILLIS

NORTON, VA – Anne Stallard Willis, 87, died Saturday, October 12, 2019, at University of Kentucky Healthcare Hospital in Lexington, Ky. She was a member of the Park Avenue Baptist Church in Norton where she served as choir director. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow “Woody” Willis; four sons, Rod Willis, Donnie Willis, David Willis and George “Bo” Willis; her mother, Evelyn Stewart and a granddaughter, Leslie Lyons.

She is survived by two brothers, Hugh Stallard and his wife Gloria of Midlothian, Va. and Frank Stallard of Abingdon, Va.; a sister, Patricia “Tracy” Stallard of Norton, Va.; four grandchildren, Brandy Lawson of Church Hill, Tn., Missy Pannell and her husband Michael of Coeburn, Va., James Willis and his wife Candice of Knoxville, Tn., Alexander Willis and his wife Katelyn of Mechanicsville, Va.; ten great grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Teresa Martin of Lexington, Ky., Anita Marshall of Tacoma, Va. and Cindy Hubbard of Pound, Va.; several nieces and nephews including special nephews, Perry Stallard of Pound, Va. and Joe Stallard of Norton; special nieces, Kelli Sue Willis and Debbie Ward both of Norton, Va.; and a host of other family members.

The family will receive friends 5:30 – 7:30 pm Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday, October 17, 2019, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Lee Kidd officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

GWENDA TOLLEY McGRAW

NORTON, VA – Gwenda Tolley McGraw, 87, died Friday, October 4, 2019 at her home.in Norton, VA. Born October 27, 1931, she was a daughter of Ray and Dorothy Moore Tolley, and was the widow of Dillard McGraw.  Gwenda was a retired teacher, having taught the first grade for over twenty- five years at the Wise Primary School.

She is survived by two sons:  Thomas Wesley Mc Graw and Weaver Allen McGraw.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Monday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Her funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Jim Collie officiating.  Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
