NORMAN THOMAS CALVERT, III

NORTON, VA – Norman Thomas Calvert, III, 36, died Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.  Norman was born March 23, 1983 in Denville, NJ to Norman Calvert, Jr. and Nawal Ayli.  A former culinary chef, he and his family had made their home in Norton, Virginia for the past eight years.

Surviving Norman are his wife, Regina Hughes-Calvert, his children:  Amira Calvert, Elias Calvert, Steven Calvert, and Daniel Hughes; his parents Nawal Ayli and Norman Calvert, Jr., his sister Salimeh Jackson, and his brother, Michael Calvert, and several other uncles, aunts, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 PM Saturday, August 3, 2019 at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home, 956 Park Avenue NW, Norton, Virginia 24273.  A memorial celebration will be announced at a future time.

NELLIE M. DOBY

NORTON, VA – Nellie M. Doby, 96, died Thursday, July 25, 2019, at Mountain View Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Lee (Bill) Doby; a son, Garry Doby; her siblings, Clyde Hess, Curtis Hess, Albert Hess, Henry Hess, Pearl Williams, Louise Boggs, Ruth Ann Brickey and Alice Hammonds.

She is survived by a daughter, Alice Chandler and her husband Darrell of Big Stone Gap, Va.; a son, Wilson Doby and his wife Sue of Dandridge, Tn.; daughter-in-law, Teresa Doby of Big Stone Gap, Va.; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including special nieces, Hope and Henrietta Tate and special friends Lavaughn Kern and family.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Saturday, July 27, 2019, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Roger Sloce officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11:00 am Sunday, July 28, 2019, in the Laurel Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am to travel in procession to the cemetery.

PAUL DAY

DUNBAR, VA - Paul Monroe Day, 96, passed away peacefully at his home in the Dunbar community, Monday, July 22, 2019.  He was born March 10, 1923 to William Morgan Day and Amanda Pierson Day.  He married his wife, Thelma Mullins Day September 15, 1947.  Together they had nine children.   Paul was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy.  He retired from Westmoreland Coal Company in 1985 after working 35 + years.  Paul was a resident of Dunbar for 66 years and was a devoted member of the Dunbar Community Church.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Thelma, a son, Douglas Day, a grandchild, Bonnie Pennington, his parents, Morgan and Amanda Day, his brothers and sisters:  Clyde Day, Clifford Day, Fred Day, Kermit Day, Ralph Day, Genevie Presley, Gaynell Losh, and Mary Ruth King.

Surviving are his children Gerry Day (Nita), Orange Park, FL,  Roger Day, Norton, VA, Shelby Summers (Darrell), Norton, VA, Deanna Garland (Jerry) Evansville, IN, Patty Varner (Mickey) Keokee, VA, Hope McNeil (Tom), Wise, VA, Regina “Tweety” Wilson (Jimmy), Dunbar, VA, and Jamie Cox  (Andy), Church Hill, TN;  his brother Charles Day, and sister, Novella Stiltner, 22 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Wednesday, July 24. 2019 at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. His funeral service will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Tony Nunley and Tom McNeil officiating.  Family and friends will gather by 10:30 AM Thursday at the funeral home.  They will travel in procession to the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton, where burial with military honors will be provided by the United States Navy and local veterans service organizations.  Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

CARL WAYNE DEAN

NORTON, VA – Carl Wayne Dean, 66, died Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport, Tn. He was a former truck driver for Presley Tucking. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Cooke; his mother, Polly Dean Clark; a brother, James Clark and a sister, Lena Collins.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Sue Jackson Dean; grandchildren, Alyson Cooke and Dylan Cooke; a brother, Donald Clark; three sisters, Regina Jackson, Susie Martin and her husband Tim, and Christy Craiger and her husband Marvin; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm Friday, July 19, 2019, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton.

The family wishes to thank the Dialysis Center of Norton, C-Trans Ambulance Service and the ICU staff at Indian Path Hospital for the care and compassion given to Carl.

DONALD RUTH

NORTON, VA - Donald R. Ruth “Grandad”, 83, of Norton, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Norton Community Hospital. He was of the Baptist faith.

Don retired from Norfolk/Southern Railroad in the late 90’s after more than 33 years of service. He was a true outdoorsman that loved hunting and fishing and he shared his passion for the two with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

“Grandad”, as he was known by many, was also an avid sports fan, watching everything from Little League to professional. He was a coach and mentor to many children throughout the years, gladly passing his knowledge and wisdom of the respective game down to those that loved the sport as much as he did.

Don is preceded in death by his loving wife Helen (Sturgill) Ruth; his parents, Maynard and Pauline (Belcher) Ruth; an infant brother, Charles Prentice and a sister Susie (Ruth) Robinette.

He is survived by his daughter Kim (Montie) Marshall of Norton; sons Timothy Ruth and Trevor (Crystal) Ruth. Grandchildren Josh (Whitney) Marshall, Bryson (Bree) Marshall, Katie Marshall, Taiden and Dawson Williams-Ruth; great grandchildren Carter and Addilee Marshall and Waylon Marshall; and special fur babies Essa, Lily and Mocha. He is also survived by sisters Jean Thacker of Indianapolis, Ind. and Girlie Burns of Brooksville, FL; a brother Cowboy (Betty) Ruth of Indianapolis.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at Hagy & Fawbush funeral home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Wednesday, July 17, 2019, in the funeral home chapel with beloved nephew Pastor Randy Sturgill officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Wesley Campbell, Don’s physician and friend. To the doctors, nurses and staff at Southwest Virginia Cancer Center for all their love and care — these people are truly angels on earth. Dr. Vito-Cruz and the other doctors and nurses in the ICU of Norton Community Hospital.

MARY HOLCOMB

NORTON, VA - Mary Elizabeth Holcomb, 96, died at her home in Lexington, KY.  She was one of fifteen children born to Landis and Mary Lou (Hayes) Bates, and, was the widow of Ed Holcomb.  Known to her family as “Cissy”, she was a retired Registered Nurse, who in her years in Norton worked at the former St. Mary’s Hospital and former Park Avenue Hospital.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Norton.

She is survived by her remaining sister, Jackie Hubbard and her husband, Kelly, of Lexington, KY, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral, 956 Park Avenue NW, Norton, VA  24273.  Her funeral service will be celebrated at 7 PM Tuesday in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Jim Collie officiating.  Family and friends will gather Wednesday morning between 10 – 10:30 AM where they will then depart in procession to the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for interment.
