DONNIE DUNCAN

NORTON, VA – Donald Lee Duncan, 65, died Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  A native of Wise, VA, he was a son of the late George and Sybil (Gilly) Duncan.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Huff) Duncan.  Donnie worked for 28 years in the coal mines of Southwest Virginia, was an avid Harley-Davidson cyclist and was affiliated with the Christian Motorcyclists Association.  He was a loving husband to his wife, a faithful provider for his family, and a loyal friend.

Surviving are his children and their spouses:  Kevin and Amy Duncan, Rodney and Sonya Duncan, and Kim and Anthony Gilliam; his brothers: Ernest Duncan, Tommy Duncan, Bobby Duncan, Butch Duncan, and Steve Duncan; his sisters:  Ruth Womack, Bernice Hawkins, Betty Webb, and Wilma Sturgill; eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  A Celebration of Life will be at 8 PM in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Ernest Duncan officiating.

LINDA MARRS

WISE, VA – Linda Marlayne (Black) Marrs, 63, died peacefully Monday, July 28, 2014 at the home of her mother. Linda was born April 26, 1951 to Lawrence and Irene (Carroll) Black in Harlan, Ky. She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence Black and a brother, John Mark Black.

Linda worked many years as hostess server and manager at Holiday Inn and most recently at Darden School of Business, UVA Charlottesville. She was a master gardener and enjoyed cooking and crosswords and her little doggie Eli.

She is survived by her loving husband, John Marrs, Jr.; two sons, David LoBiondo (Tracy) and Anthony LoBiondo (April), granddaughter, Lillian Catherine Ava LoBiondo; stepdaughters, Summer Lane and Johnda Davis; her mother, Irene Carroll Black; a brother James Black (Shawn); two sisters, Paulette Phillips and her husband Ron, Paula Barton and her husband David; a host of nieces and nephews and special friends Rita Mullins and Sarah Kring.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Wednesday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Memorial services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Wednesday in the funeral home chapel.

THEDA FAYE HAMPTON

NORTON, VA – Theda Faye Dean Hampton, 77, of the Needmore community of Norton passed away Friday, July 25, 2014 at Bristol Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. She was of the Freewill Baptist Faith.

Faye was preceded in death by her parents; Don and Bertie Robbins; a sister, Betty Robbins; a brother, Joris Standifer. Faye was the widow of Corbin Hampton.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeanie Light Bolling and her husband Charlie of Roanoke, VA; a son, Randy Light of Spartanburg, SC; her grandchildren, Andy Bolling of Wise, VA, Ashley Workman and her husband Keith of Roanoke, VA, Courtney Bolling of Norton, VA; great grandchildren, Braxtyn Bolling, Abbi Bolling, Keatyn Bolling and Peyton Workman; her brother, Gary Robbins and his wife Donna of Norton, VA; a cousin, Philip Ison and his wife Judy of Coeburn, VA; her niece, Missy Robbins and her fiancé Robert Boone of Myrtle Beach, SC; great niece, McKenzie Turner of Myrtle Beach, SC; great nephew, Brandon Turner of Wise, VA; special relatives, Betty Mullins and Polly Ray of Spartanburg, SC, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Private services will be held Tuesday at the funeral home.

JANET A. PHILLIPS

NORTON, VA - Janet A. Phillips, 56, died Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Bristol Hospice House following a long battle with breast cancer.  She was very devoted to her family.  Jan was a retired over the road trucker with Tyson Farms, and she enjoyed her gardening, farming and her livestock. 

She is survived by her parents, Elmer and Faye Lois (Wood) Phillips, her sisters and brothers (and their spouses):  Margie Helen (Allen) Carter, Roderick E. (Monique) Phillips, Peggy Phillips (Joseph Allen) Kelsey, Jean Phillips (John) Hill, Willie Wayne (Angel) Phillips, Crystal Phillips Bentley and her fiancé David Allen Lark; fourteen nieces and nephews, and 16 great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Wednesday in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Darrell Bolling officiating.  Burial will follow at the Laurel Grove Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center, or to the Wellmont Hospice House.

MOLLY THACKER CLISSO

NORTON, VA  - Mollie Thacker Clisso, age 78, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 20l4 at her home after a brief illness.  She was a member of the Freedom of Worship Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and a tireless Fund Raiser for church ministries.  She was affiliated with several insurance agencies in the Norton area for forty three years.  She was a daughter of the late Henry P. and Nancy (Fields) Thacker and was also preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters. 

Surviving are husband Hobert Clisso; daughters, Patricia Clisso Ramey and her husband, Jerry of Norton, Becky Clisso Bevins and her husband ,Scott, Big Stone Gap, VA; a son, Hobert “Buddy” Clisso, Jr, and his wife, Kim, Wise, Virginia; four grandchildren, Sierra Bevins, Ally Connell, Nathan Daniel Clisso and wife Heather and Stephanie Nichole Clisso and a brother Roy Thacker, Norton, VA.

The family will receive friends 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, July 18, 2014 in Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home Chapel.  Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM in the Chapel with Rev. Robbie Fultz officiating.  Interment will be at 11:00 AM Saturday in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.  Family and friends will meet at 10:30 AM Saturday at the funeral home where they will go in procession to the cemetery.

GLESSIE L. THOMPSON

NORTON, VA - Glessie L. Thompson, 86, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Big Stone Gap, VA.  The widow of Elmo H. Thompson, she was of the Christian faith.

Glessie is survived by her daughter, Joyce Jenkins and her husband, Roger of Norton, her two grandchildren:  April Fletcher and her husband, Kyle and Travis Jenkins and his wife Beth; two great grandchildren, Eric Fletcher and Brylee Jenkins, three sisters:  Thelma Fleenor of Gate City, VA, Alice Fields, and Jean Robinette, both of Norton, and a brother Isaac Fields, Jr. Wise, VA.  

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Thursday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Robbie Fultz officiating.  Family and friends will gather between 10 – 10:30 AM Friday at the funeral home where they then will travel in procession to the Laurel Grove Cemetery for burial services.   Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home of Norton is serving the Thompson-Jenkins family.

JOANN VAN WINKLE

NORTON, VA - Joann Van Winkle, 80, went to be with her LORD, Saturday, July 5, 2014 at the home of her niece, Glenda K. Gibson in Indianapolis, IN to which she had been living since she lost her home.  She had been fighting Alzheimer’s Disease for about ten years.   Born in Norton, Virginia, she was the widow of Ralph Ray Van Winkle.  Her father, Clarence D. Hensley, and mother, Stella Mae Freeman Hensley, as well as her sons, Randall R. Van Winkle and Darrell L. Van Winkle all preceded her in death. Her brothers: Elmer G. Hensley, James Hensley, Carl J. Hensley, and a sister Alleen Hensley Davidson have gone, too, as have three brothers and a sister she never got to meet.  They are just waiting for her. Joann was retired from the laboratory department of Norton Community Hospital, and was a faithful member of the Trinity Life Center. 

She is survived by four grandchildren; Crystal, Victoria, Brian, and Amanda Van Winkle, all of Norton; four great-grandchildren, Presley, Payton, Connor, and Aiden Van Winkle, and a daughter-in-law Cathy Van Winkle; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Thursday at the Trinity Life Center in Tacoma.  Going Home services will be celebrated at 7 PM at the church with the Reverend Ronnie Collins and the Reverend C.J. Gibson officiating.  Family and friends will meet at 10:45 AM Friday at the graveside at Laurel Grove Cemetery for burial.
