DENVER C. COOKE

NORTON, VA - Denver C. Cooke, 67, passed away Friday, May 23, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving wife, daughter, and family, after a brief bout with cancer.  Born in Dorchester, VA, he was a retired maintenance foreman with the Mead –Westvaco paper mill in Covington, VA.  Upon his retirement he relocated to Norton in 2008.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was active in the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He was of the Pentecostal faith and attended the Lighthouse Family Worship Center in Wise, VA.

Denver was preceded in death by his father, Everette Cooke.  Surviving  are his loving wife of 45 years, Marilyn Williams Cooke, his daughter, Amy Cooke (and Erich Davis), his mother, Ritter Cooke, his sister, Darlene Ramsey (and husband, Terry), Wise, VA, his brothers Doug Cooke , Galax, VA and Darrel Cooke (and his wife Glenda), Norton, VA, and a host of relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Monday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Roger Barker and Dr. Tom Renfro officiating.  The family will gather by 10:30 AM Tuesday at the funeral home where they then will depart in procession to the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for burial, with military honors provided by veteran service organizations and the Honors Team of the Virginia National Guard.

The Cooke family extends a special thank you to Total Home Care & Hospice of Big Stone Gap, and to nurses:  Miss Laura, Miss Dixie, and Miss Dee.


DAYTON STIDHAM

NORTON, VA – Dayton Stidham, 67, died Wednesday, May 21, 2014 in Holston Valley Medical Center. Dayton retired from CNW Wastewater Authority with 30 years of service in the water industry. He was a deacon at Esserville Church. Dayton was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda “Susie” Stidham, his father, William “Bill” Stidham and a twin brother Clayton.

Surviving are his daughter Kimberly Perry and her husband Randy of Wise, VA; two grandchildren, Lleyton and Logan Perry; his mother, Annette Bolling Stidham of Norton; fiancé, Vickie Wells of Norton, VA; 2 brothers, Franklin Delano Stidham and his wife Billie of Knoxville, TN, Connie Stidham of Atlanta, GA; a sister-in-law, Rita Jo Beeler and her husband Jack of Winchester. VA; and his “fur” babies, Buffy and Casey.

The family will receive friends from 4-7:00 PM Friday at the Esserville Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Friday at the church with Jim Smith officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday at the Gray Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the church by 10:30 AM Saturday to travel in procession to the cemetery.

The family sends a special thank you to Holston Valley Medical Center Trauma Team and the ICU staff.


GERTRUDE BULLION

NORTON, VA – Gertrude Bertha Roberts Bullion, 88, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Big Stone Gap, VA. She was born September 14, 1925 to James Monroe Roberts and Peggy Jane (Maggie) White Roberts.

As a young girl, she worked in Baltimore, MD making parachutes for World War II and always stated that was the best job she ever had, taking pride in helping the war effort. She was a former employee of St. Mary’s Hospital, Norton Sewing Factory and Wise General Hospital.

Her children were most important to her, and devoted her life to her family. Enjoying the art of quilt-making, she provided each family member with beautiful handmade quilts that will always be treasured reminders of her loving devotion to her family. She also enjoyed embroidery, a skill learned as a young girl, and delighted in sharing colorful items with her family.

Although suffering physical handicaps later in life on this earth, she will be well and whole and walking with God in heaven. She will be dearly missed and held forever close in our hearts.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; a daughter, Sharon Bowers; a granddaughter, Ann Marché Bowers; three sisters, Cora Maggard, Kathleen Toney and Ethel Salyers; seven brothers, Walter Alderson Roberts, Vollie Wayne Roberts, Bascom Cambell Roberts, Emory Truman Roberts, Burley Curtis Roberts, Henry Patrick Roberts and Earl Richard Roberts; and four infant daughters.

She is survived by her sister, Juanita Winkcuff of Norton, VA; two daughters, Marlene Young and her husband John of Duncan, OK and Shirley Bullion of Kingsport, TN; two sons, Ralph (Butch) Bullion and his wife Leah and Richard Bullion and his wife Karen all of Norton, VA.

She was blessed with eight grandchildren, Thomas Miller of Chicago, IL, Paige Bowers of Johnson City, TN, Andrew Bullion of Norton, VA, Juston Bullion of Wise, VA, Scott Young of Tulsa, OK, Brandon Young of Tucson, AZ, Bethany Benes of Ada, OK and Christian Bullion of Norton, VA; nine great grandchildren, Allie Bowers, Peyton Howren, Jake Bedard, Tierney and Thomson Miller, Chase and Brooke Bullion, Rachael and Morgan Benes and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; a special friend, Juanita Egan.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Monday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Monday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Randy Carter officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will meet by 10:30 AM Tuesday at the funeral home to travel in procession to the cemetery.
