BILLIE JEAN COOKE

WISE, VA – Billie Jean Cooke, 84, died Sunday, December 31, 2017, at her home in Wise, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Grace Page Messer; her husband, Curtis Cooke, Sr.; two sons, Randy Cooke and Timmy “Spider” Cooke; a granddaughter, Felicia Cooke Kern; four brothers, Ray Messer, John “June” Messer, Darrell Messer and Eugene “Buddy” Messer.

She is survived by four sons, Curtis “Eddie” Cooke, Jr. and his wife Sherry, Terry Cooke, and Gregory Cooke and his wife Jill, all of Norton, Va., Jerry Cooke and his wife Rosa of Big Stone Gap, Va.; three daughters, Regina “Jeannie” Cooke Sturgill, Marina Cooke Edwards and her husband David, and Tina Cooke and Sanford Hamilton, all of Wise, Va.; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; a brother, Glen “Pop” Messer and his wife Faye of Norton, Va.; three sisters, Ruby Williams of Knoxville, Tn., Helen Thacker of Wise, Va. and Betty Sturgill and her husband Percy of Big Stone Gap, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

At her request, private funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2017 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Entombment will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.


WILLIE C. ROBBINS, JR.

NORTON, VA – Willie Cicero Robbins, Jr., 87, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017, at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Wise, Va. He was a member of Bethel Chapel Church in Wise, Va. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA Local #8017, Dixiana District 28. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Cicero Robbins, Sr. and Ora Etta Sturgill Robbins, his wife, Madeline Wells Robbins; a brother, Hershell Robbins; four sisters, Beulah Adams, Eva Owens, Nancy Light and Dixie Wells.

He is survived by three sons, Willie C (Bud) Robbins, III of Wise, Va., Michael R. Robbins of Norton, Va. and Eddie Wayne Robbins of Wise, Va.; two daughters, Rita Jessee of Norton, Va. and Stacey Pennington of Duffield, Va.; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 12-2 pm Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Randy Sturgill officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton.


ALICE FIELDS

NORTON, VA – Alice “Granny” Fields, 95, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, at her home in Norton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac Newton Fields and Vinetta Thacker Fields; several brothers and sisters; a son-in-law, Robert Lawson; and two granddaughters, Angela Lawson and Roberta Lawson.

Alice is survived by a daughter, Judy Lawson of Norton, Va.; four grandchildren, Crystal Cole and her husband Ron of Wise, Va., Becky Lawson of Wise, Va., Myra Palmer and her husband Bud of Norton, Va. and Shelley Fawbush of Norton, Va.; her great grandchildren; Canaan Stacy-Lawson and Abram Stacy-Lawson, both of Norton, Va., Brittany Hensley and her husband Michael of Norton, Va., Tiffany Cole of Wise, Va., Ethan Cole of Wise, Va., Emily Trent and Sarah Bevins both of Wise, Va., Cassie Ledford and her husband Nick of Wise, Va., William Palmer of Bristol, Tn., Ally Palmer of Norton, Va.; four great great grandchildren, Hayden Hensley, Hayleigh Hensley, Landon Ledford and Cameron Ledford; a brother, Isaac Fields of Wise, Va.; two sisters, Thelma Fleenor and her husband Tom of Gate City, Va., Jean Robinette of Norton, Va.; several nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family will receive friends 5-7 pm Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Roger Jenkins officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11 am Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017, at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Va. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am Saturday to travel in procession to the cemetery.

ASHLEY LEWIS

NORTON, VA – Ashley Lewis, 31, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She is survived by her mother, Daytona Sparks of Killeen, Tx; her father, James Lewis, Sr. of Ironton, Oh.; three sisters, Margo Lewis of Norton, Va., Delta (Dee Dee) Sparks Cowan of Fort Hood, Tx., Shirley Kay Diamond of Killen, Tx.; one brother, James Lewis, Jr.; four children, Morgan, Samuel, Gabriel and Kloe Howery; and a host of extended family.

The family will receive friends from 12-2 pm Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton.


FRANK HERBERT ADDINGTON

COEBURN, VA – Frank Herbert Addington, 82, joined his beloved wife Madylon in heaven on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, after a brief illness. Frank was born February 21, 1935 in Wise, Va. being the second child of Charles and Doshia Addington. Frank was a loving and devoted husband and father who always put his family before himself. Frank spent most of his working life as a welder fabricator. He was considered by many a master of his trade. Frank’s greatest joy in life was making others happy and lending a hand where needed. Those he came in contact with will never forget him.

He is survived by a two sons, John Addington and Greg Addington; four brothers, Homer Addington, Robert Addington, Clyde Addington and Thomas Addington; a sister, Betty Hill; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Gary Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the Addington-Hensley Cemetery in the Rocky Fork Community of Wise County.


EDSEL ROY ROBERTS

NORTON, VA – Edsel Roy Roberts, 72, died Sunday, December 10, 2017 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.  A retired coal miner, Ed was an avid outdoorsman, always enjoying hunting, fishing, and gardening.  He was a son of Otis Roberts and Mable Wells Roberts.

Surviving are his wife, Lucille Stidham Roberts, his children and spouses:  David Edsel and Jessica Ann Roberts, Tazewell, VA, Rodney Roy and Cristen Nichole Roberts, Norton, VA, and Michelle Denise and Jason Earl Stanley, Wise, VA; four grandchildren:  Ian Clevinger, Jadeance Stanley, Nicole Stanley and Colton Stanley; and his sister, Louise Sanders, Wise, VA.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2 PM Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.   A funeral service will be conducted at 2 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Ronnie Kinder officiating.  Burial will follow in the Gray Cemetery, Guest River Road, Norton, VA.


THERESA TALLEY

NORTON, VA - Theresa Jean Mooney Ingram Talley entered this life on March 24, 1961 and entered eternal life on December 7, 2017.  She was baptized by and joined Mount Zion Baptist Church under the Reverend Robert Rhinehart.  After marrying Doug Ingram, she served the Church of Christ.  Following her divorce, she joined Blackman Chapel AME Zion Church, where she was ordained a Deaconess and served as treasurer.  The Lord brought her back to Mt. Zion Baptist Church on July 12, 2015 with her four grandchildren.  Theresa drove the church van and was the missionary President.  Theresa played a major role in the Christian growth of her grandchildren who were baptized in July 2015 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  She was employed at Norton Elementary School until becoming ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Della Mooney, her paternal grandparents, Harve and Ruth Mooney, her maternal grandparents, Sonny and Edith Jones, her brother Daniel Patrick Mooney, and a granddaughter Jazira Marie Johnson.

She leaves to mourn:  her daughter, Heather Peters and her husband, Brad Peters; four grandchildren, Tyrell Jerma Ingram, Monica Latrice Johnson, Jaquan Christopher Johnson, and Kiana Skye Johnson, her husband, Allie Wilson Talley, Jr., and her former husband, Douglas Jason Ingram; five brothers and four sisters:  Margaret (Melvin) White, Raleigh, NC, Jack (Cari) Mooney, Norton, VA, Mary Alice Mooney, Coeburn, VA, Ruth Mooney Keys, Norton, VA, Harve (Shirly) Mooney, Norton, VA, Lee Mooney, Stone Mountain, GA, Larry Mooney, Knoxville, TN, David (Amanda) Mooney, Chesterfield, VA  Ericka Mooney, Norton, VA;  her six nieces and five nephews:  Josh Key, Jarrod Key, Jasmine Key, Emily Mooney, Angela Mooney, Nicholas Mooney, Andres Mooney, Paige Mooney, Jordan Mooney, and Elijah Osborne.  Cousins and friends cannot be numbered.  Special recognition must be given to Apostle Yanthophalees Jackson who was with her through it all.

Memorial services will be Tuesday evening, Dec. 12, 2017, at 7:00 PM at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM.


WILMA LEE SHIPLEY

NORTON, VA - Our beloved mother, Wilma Lee Shipley, age 87, passed away peacefully at home in Clintwood, Va., on Tuesday, December 5, 2017.

Our mother was preceded in death by her beloved husband and our father, Samuel Augustus Shipley. She is survived by her devoted daughters Toni Brooks, Marlene Shipley, Sherry Roberts. and Sandra Shipley; also by five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Wilma retired after working for many years at Electrolux in Norton. She was co-chairman of the Fundraising Committee for building the new St. Mary's Hospital, now known as Mountain View Hospital.  She was also co-founder of the local Women's Caring Hearts Breast Cancer Support Group.

Our mother was God's gift to us. We will miss hearing her tell about fond childhood memories in Skeet Rock near Clintwood, and sharing our life dreams with her. She taught us an appreciation of music, art and literature. She loved the Autumn season, and had a special place in her heart for animals. Therefore, she requested that, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, No Kill Shelter, Dickenson County, Va. Chapter, 5091 Dickenson Highway, Clintwood, Va. 24228.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 9. 2017, from noon until 1 pm at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Mark Dixon officiating. Interment will follow in the East Stone Gap Cemetery, East Stone Gap, Va.


MARY CHRISTINE JOHNSON

NORTON, VA – Mary Christine Johnson, 85, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2017 at Norton Community Hospital. She was a Christian all her adult life. She was preceded in death by her father, Lester Wells; her mother, Eva Sturgill Jayne; and her son, Jeffery Johnson.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, James Edd Johnson of Norton, Va.; two sons, Gary “Butch” Johnson of Mobile, Ala. and James Randy Johnson and his wife Sue of Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren; several great grandchildren; a brother, Emerson Jayne and his wife Wanda of Church Hill, Tn.; a special niece, Amy Jayne of Church Hill, Tn.; two sisters Polly Williams and her husband Johnny of Church Hill, Tn. and Kathy Scott and her husband Gerald of Kingsport, Tn.; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 pm Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ralph Hammonds and Raymond Sturgill officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, at the Gardner Cemetery in Powell River Community of Norton. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am to travel in procession to the cemetery.
