GENERAL CURTIS WALKER

NORTON, VA – General Curtis Walker, 78, died Monday, October 23, 2017 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.  General was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea.  He was retired from the Flatwoods Job Corps where he was a welding instructor for over 23 years.  He was a long- standing member of the First Baptist Church in Norton.  General was an enthusiastic restorer of old automobiles, an avid metal sculptor and woodworker, and was very fond of his cats!

Surviving him are his wife, Linda Walker, his sons and their wives:  David and LuAnn Walker, Columbia, TN, and Neil and Beth Walker, Norton, VA.  His grandchildren are:  Daniel and Sean Walker, and Robert, Connor and Elliot Walker.  Also surviving are two half- brothers, Tim and Pat Walker, a half-sister, Kim Fitzmiller, a special cousin, Donna Wright and special nieces, Courtne Wells de Potorreal and Marisa Upson.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Wednesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. A funeral service will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with the Reverend Mark Dixon and the Reverend Jim Collie officiating.  Family and friends will gather between 10 and 10:30 AM Thursday at the funeral home, where they will then depart in procession to the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens mausoleum for committal and entombment.  The Virginia National Guard Honors Team and local veterans service organizations will provide military honors.  Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Norton, PO Box 499, Norton, VA  24273.


EARNEST COOKE

NORTON, VA – Earnest Cooke, 79, passed away Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at his residence in Norton. He was a loving husband, father, and family man. He was a retired coal miner and an avid outdoorsman with a special love of hunting and fishing. He was a son of the late Jessie and Angeline Sturgill-Cooke.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jackie Mullins Cooke of Norton, Va.; two sons, Ferlin Cooke and his wife Angie of Coeburn, Va. and John Du Russell of Penn.; a daughter, Melissa Cooke-Brooks and her husband Gary of Ooltewah, Tn.; six grandchildren, Lauren Brooks, Felicia Walton, Dustin Cooke, John Du Russell, Jr., Dylan Cooke and Joshua Brooks; two great grandsons, Mason Cooke and Joel Cooke; a brother, Hubert Cooke of Church Hill, Tn.; three sisters, Mary Brickey, Sara Roberts and Glessie Taylor all of Norton, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastors Allen Culbertson and Donnie “Bub” Culbertson officiating. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, at White Oak Gap Cemetery in Norton. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am Thursday to travel in procession to the cemetery.


MARY JUNE STIDHAM

NORTON, VA – Mary June McCoy Stidham, 80, passed at her home on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ora and Mable McCoy; a sister, Inez Hunter; three brothers, Vibert McCoy, Eugene McCoy and Cecil “Buddy” McCoy.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Hubert A. Stidham of Norton, Va.; four sons, Marty Stidham, Michael Stidham, Mark Stidham and Bryan Stidham all of Norton, Va.; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Morgan of Cookeville, Tn. and Samantha Bloomer of Norton, Va.; three grandchildren, Erica and Taylor Freeman of Cookeville Tn. and Bria Bloomer of Norton, Va.; three great grandchildren; Chloe, Bryson and Rylan; two brothers, William “Bill” McCoy of Bristol, Va. and Raymond McCoy of Winterhaven, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, Va. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 am Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Norton, Va. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am Monday to travel in procession to the cemetery.


PAULINE A. HAGY

NORTON, VA - Pauline Anderson Hagy died Friday, October 6 at Mountain View Regional Hospital.  Born in 1925 to John Earl and Ferol Stamper Anderson on their Lee County, Virginia dairy farm, she was raised with four generations of family in the household. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, infant sister Phyllis Jean Anderson, Mary Lynne Croom and Margaret (Peggy) Blair.  Surviving are her son, Paul Martin “Marty” Hagy of Norton and her daughter, Margaret Lynne Cress of Abingdon and their spouses Mary Hagy and Joe Cress. She leaves three granddaughters who loved their “Granny Polly”: Amy Hagy of Durham, NC, Karen Hollick (Richard) of Damascus, and Candice Calloway of Meadowview, and three step grandchildren:  Brianna, Mary Jo, and Peyton Stallard of Norton. Her great grandchildren are Rebecca, Ivy, and Austin Hollick and Shalyn, Shiann, and Chafin Blevins.  She is also survived by Sharon (Bob) Nixon of Wise, her church family from Norton Christian Church, and her caregivers at Mountain View Regional Medical Center and Long Term Care.

After graduating from Pennington High School, Pauline received her BS degree from Lincoln Memorial University.  She had many fond memories of her years there and was proud to be a part of the Alumni Association. She earned a Library Science certification from the College of William and Mary in 1964.  Her teaching career began in St. Charles where she taught Spanish and typing. After marrying, she moved to Norton and began teaching third grade in Norton Elementary School, where she remained for the rest of her career, retiring from Norton City Schools in 1986.

Pauline was a member of Norton Christian Church since its founding in 1965 and a member of Circle No. 1 serving as treasurer for fifty years. She was a former Sunday School teacher and church trustee. She was a proud member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lovelady Chapter ,and an associate member of the Boone Trail Chapter. For many years, Pauline was active in the Norton Community Hospital Auxiliary, serving as President for two years. She was a member of the Norton Garden Club, the American Association of University Women, and the Norton Literary Club.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Monday, October 9 at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Her funeral service will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Pastors Jim Wells and Tom Crise officiating.  She will be laid to rest Tuesday morning at 11 AM at the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, Virginia.  Family and friends will leave in procession from the funeral home at 10:15 AM en route to the cemetery.


PAULINE HAMILTON

NORTON, VA - Pauline Hensley Hamilton, 71, died Monday, October 2, 2017 at Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport, TN.  She was a daughter of the late Isaac S. and Bertha Lawson Hensley, and was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.  Pauline attended the Dunbar Community Church.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Earl Hamilton, her three children (and their spouses), Greg (Debbie) Hamilton, Robin (J.R.) Baber, and Bo (Teresa) Hamilton, all of Norton, VA; 8 grandchildren, a special “grandfriend,” Tara; 13 great grandchildren, a twin brother Paul Hensley, Wise, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a special nurse and caregiver, Rosey Mullins.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Thursday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  The funeral service will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Tony Nunley officiating.  Family and friends will gather by 10:30 AM Friday at the funeral home where they will then travel in procession to the Laurel Grove Cemetery for graveside committal  at 11 AM. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
