DORIS RHEA STURGILL

NORTON, VA – Doris Rhea Smith Sturgill, 84, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017, at her home in Norton. As a teenager, she played basketball and as an adult loved camping in the Everglades, riding mini-bikes and taking her children, nieces and nephews to outdoor parks. She had a love of family, church family, friends and service to others that was not surpassed. Her wonderful outlook on life and attitude of gratitude for even the smallest wonder and beauty was a blessing to everyone who encountered her. This attitude continued and carried her through her illness when the struggle became great. Her cheerful attitude and caring presence will be greatly missed, but will be carried with each of us as a reminder of how beautiful life can be. One of her last mornings with us, she woke, looked out of the window and said, “It’s a BE- U- TE- Ful day” – and that is how she lived each and every day, looking at the beauty of the day.

Doris was of the Apostolic Pentecostal faith. She served as a nurse’s aide working in Dr. Bond’s office and St. Mary’s hospital in Norton. Later she worked at Broward General Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. She also enjoyed mowing lawns in Ft. Lauderdale.
