NORTON, VA - Doris Ann Salyers
Willis, 85, died Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Mountain View Regional Medical
Center in Norton. Born in Pardee,
Virginia, she was a daughter of Roy Lee and Grace Thelma (Snodgrass) Salyers. Doris was the widow of the late William
Houston “Bill” Willis, and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Willis and her brothers, Ralph and Tom Salyers, and her sisters, Edith Bonhert and Wanda Castle, and a
grandson, Kirby Willis.
She is survived by her son Steve
Willis and his wife, Mariza, Duffield, VA, her sister, Dorothy Fields, Norton,
VA, four grandchildren: April Sims, J.D.
Willis, Jeb and Mosby Willis; four great grandchildren: Brittny Shortridge,
Cody Hall, Scotty Sims, and Callie Sims.
The family will receive friends
from 5-7 PM Saturday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 PM in
the funeral home chapel with Pastor Billy Wells officiating. Family and friends will gather at 1 PM Sunday
at the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for committal and interment.
GLADYS STALLARD
NORTON, VA – Gladys Elizabeth
Julian Stallard, 100, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013 in Norton Community
Hospital. She was a former member of Norton Garden Club and Norton Literary
Club. She was a member of Daughters of American Revolution (DAR), United
Daughters of Confederacy (UDC), Hawkins County Historical Society and a Charter
Member of the Wise County Historical Society. She was a former member of United
Methodist Church in East Stone Gap, VA. She was a member of the Norton
Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher,
Secretary-Treasurer and Presbyterian Women. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Clifford Lowell Stallard and a grandson, Matthew Earls.
She is survived by her daughter
and son-in-law, Sandra and Don Earls of Norton, VA; a son and daughter-in-law,
David and Victoria Castor Stallard of Poquoson, VA; 5 grandchildren, Shawn Edwiena
Earls, Julia Rebekah Earls, Mark Daniel Earls, David Julian and Susan Stallard,
Robert Lowell and Krysten Stallard; 6 great grandchildren; a brother, Ben
Garrett Julian of Accokeek, MD; a sister, Helen Stem of Rockville, MD; several
nieces and nephews; special friends, Bruce Stallard, Rhonda Roberson, Nancy
Vaughn, Nancy Clark Baker and Denise Gardner.
The family is planning a memorial
service on April 27, 2013 at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Norton.
Arrangement details will be announced at a later date.

NORTON, VA – Tim Allen, 51, died
Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013 in Johnson City Medical Center. He was a long time coal
truck driver and enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Donna
Allen of Norton, VA; 3 sons, Aaron Allen, Shawn and Barbara Allen, and Patrick
Allen all of Norton, VA; 3 daughters,
Cindy Younce, Christine Wells and Kayla Allen all of Norton, VA; 3
grandchildren, Zoey Wells, Desiree Stapleton, and Abby Stapleton; 2 brothers,
Grayson Allen of Big Stone Gap, VA, Jerry Allen of Texas; a sister, Suzie and
Paul Hopkins of Shelbyville, TN; several nieces and nephews.

MARJORIE WELLS BALDWIN
NORTON, VA – Marjorie Ann Wells Baldwin, 79, died Thursday, Jan, 24, 2013 in Norton Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles F. Wells and Leona Moore Wells. She was a member of the First Church of God in Norton.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Baldwin of Norton, VA; a daughter and her husband, Mitzi and Chuck Greene of Liberty, SC; 2 granddaughters, Megan and Seth Williams, Bethany Greene; her sisters, Charlotte Estep, Irene Stewart, Wilma and Kenneth Hubbard, Janet Wells and Esther and Paul Bolling all of Norton, VA; her brothers, Thomas Lynn Wells of Lexington, VA and Glenn Allen and Irene Wells of Norton, VA; several nieces and nephews.

MICHAEL TATE
Newspaper man, family man, civic leader.
NORTON, VA - Michael Nelson Tate, 47, died Tuesday, Jan. 15,
from injuries sustained in a firearms accident.
Tate was a graduate of J.I. Burton High School, The Gow School,
South Wales, N.Y., and West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, W.Va., where
he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity.
Tate was best known as a newspaper man, a civic leader, a coach
to Norton's youth, a father endlessly devoted to his blended family of six children
and a loving husband and best friend to his wife.
Born and raised in Norton, Tate grew up in a newspaper family
and enjoyed all the good that comes from life in a small town, forging
life-long friendships and leaving lasting impressions on all who knew him. In
high school, he was a stand-out in basketball and golf.
After a year at The Gow School for dyslexic children, Tate
graduated from college and returned home to the family newspaper business. At The
Coalfield Progress, he worked in sales, circulation and sports writing
until taking the helm of The Dickenson Star in Clintwood.
During his tenure there, he continued to leave his mark as a civic leader and
businessman. He was a member of the Clintwood Kiwanis Club and was chairman of
the Dickenson County Fair Committee from 1992 to 2007.
From June 1998 until December 2005, Tate was president and
co-owner of Norton Press Inc. and its three newspapers, The Coalfield
Progress, The Post and The Dickenson Star. In
that time, he initiated and oversaw the full conversion of the company's three
newspapers from black and white to full color. He served as a consultant to new
owners American Hometown Publishing until April 2006.
Tate left full-time work in the newspaper industry to devote
time to his family but continued to cover sports for the company’s three
Virginia newspapers and wrote the popular “Dope Bucket” weekly football
prognostication column that was founded by his father, the late publisher
Carroll Tate.
Tate served on the Virginia Press Association board of directors
from 2000 to 2005, was a member of the association’s advertising committee from
1994-99, and won numerous VPA awards for newspaper and advertising design,
including a best in show award in 1997.
Tate received the Region D Distinguished Service Award in 2004
and received the 2005 Carroll N. Tate Media Award from Lonesome Pine District
coaches.
Tate served as a coach for Norton Youth League Football from
2000 to the present. He was a member of the Norton city schools
superintendent’s advisory committee in 2006-07, a member of the Best Friend
Festival planning committee from 1986 to 1999 and served on Norton’s Celebrate
2000 planning committee in 1999.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carroll N. Tate.
Surviving are his wife, Paula Lea Tate; a daughter, Hannah Grace
Tate, three sons, Nelson Tate, Miles Tate and Ian Tate, and two step-children,
Olivia Davis and Isaac Davis; his mother, Robbie G. Tate, of Kingsport, Tenn.;
two sisters, Jenay Tate, of Norton, and Carol Tate Bryant, of Virginia Beach;
and four family pets whom he loved and who loved him like children, Brick,
Sophie, Winston and Reese.
Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hagy
Fawbush Funeral Home with a memorial service at the funeral home chapel on
Saturday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. The Rev. George Aichel will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be

PEGGY FLANARY SHUPE
NORTON, VA – Peggy Helen Flanary
Shupe, 79, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at her home on Kentucky Avenue in
Norton. She was a daughter of the late
Walter Belt Flanary and Marie Dorothy Houchins Flanary. Peggy was preceded in death by her son,
Robert Wright, as well as two sisters:
Betty Moore and Joan Collins.
Surviving are: a granddaughter,
Amanda Wright Houghton and her husband, Nick, Norton, VA, two brothers: Ronald
“Chub” Flanary, Blacksburg, VA, and Walter “Junior” Flanary, Dale City, VA; a sister, Dorothy Roberts, Norton, VA, and a
daughter-in-law, Reta Wright of Norton.
It was Peggy’s request that her
funeral arrangements remain private.

NORTON, VA – Mabel Marie Goad,
77, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 at the home of her daughter in Norton. She was
preceded in death by her husband, George L. Goad; her parents, Franklin and
Hattie Bowers Wagner; sisters, Trula Wagner, Mattie Davis Hamilton, Ruth Ramey
and two infant sisters.
She is survived by her daughter
and son-in-law, Debbie Goad McArthur and Rick McArthur of Norton, VA; 3
grandchildren, Christy and Jason Miller, Tina and Chris Niece, Jessica and
Andrew Colley all of Norton, VA; 6 great grandchildren, Tyson Niece, Zoe Niece,
Nico Niece, Fionna Niece, Jozlyn Colley and Alex Colley; a sister and
brother-in-law, Polly and Glen Spivey of Ben Hur, VA; special niece, Carol Gilliam of Norton, VA; several nieces and
nephews; special caregivers at First Choice Home Health including Hayes O’Quinn,
other caregivers, Mary Short, Joe Bill Thacker and her former caregiver, Debbie
Stidham.

MERLE WARD MULLINS
COEBURN, VA - Merle
Lourine Ward Mullins, 87, went to be with the LORD on Wednesday, January 9,
2013. A native of Wise County, she was born to Robert Ward and Nellie
Richardson Ward. She lived a long and blessed life, raising seven children. She
cherished her sixteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren.
Throughout her life she was a homemaker, providing for her beloved family, and
many others within her church and her community. She was known for her cooking
and canning skills as well as her treasured handmade quilts which she shared
with family, friends, and those in need. Merle loved children and the sacred
life that each one represented.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Ransom Mullins; a daughter, Barbara Arrington, a son, Richard
Mullins; four sisters, Angeline, Vera, Ruby, and Phyllis, 4 brothers Isaac,
Omer, K.D., and Gene; two sons-in-law Winston Ward and F.Carl Curtis.
Surviving
are three daughters: Bonnie Ward, Clermont, FL, Brenda Holbrook and her
husband, Sam, Coeburn, VA and Becky Curtis, Norton; two sons, Ronald Mullins
and wife, Tammie, and Roy Mullins and wife, Dianna, all of Wise.
Grandchildren are: Pam Lawhorne, Ronnie Mullins, Paige Green, Michael Ward,
Sabrina Dowell, Melanie Palm, April Osborne, Ryan Mullins, Kelly Butler, Steven
Mullins Alicia Miller, Travis Mullins, Paul Mullins, Chad Holbrook, Trevor
Curtis, and Cameron Curtis. Her surviving brothers and sister are: Max, Otis, Carter, Phillip and Bobby Ward, and Maxine Pollard. Also surviving are several nieces and
nephews, as well as twenty-nine great-grandchildren.
The
family will receive friends from 4-6:00 PM Saturday at Hagy & Fawbush
Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 PM Saturday in the
funeral home chapel. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 11:00
AM Sunday to travel in procession to the Smith-Gilliam Cemetery in Wise for

BIG STONE GAP, VA – Franklin D.
Fields, 74, went home to be with the Lord Monday, Jan. 7, 2012 at Holston
Valley Medical Center. He was a retired coal miner of Westmoreland Coal Co and
was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was preceded in
death by his parents, Isaac Newton Fields and Nettie Thacker Fields; a son,
Jeffrey Fields, a granddaughter, Angel Harvey, his brothers, Vester, Harry,
Jack and Alvin; his sisters, Virgie, Jenny and Hester.
He is survived by his wife,
Claudette Collins Fields of Big Stone Gap, VA; his sons, Jackie and Melita
Fields of Norton, VA, Carlos “Pedro” and Becky Fields of Wise, VA; his
daughters, Frankie and Bill Barnette of Wise, VA, Barbara and Jeff Harvey of
Coeburn, VA, Amy and Danny Chandler of
Big Stone Gap, VA; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; his brother,
Isaac Fields; his sisters, Thelma Fleanor, Alice Fields, Glessie Thompson,
Shelby Jean Robinette; a daughter-in-law, Darlene Fields of Ohio; several

ROBERT E. WRIGHT
NORTON, VA – Robert E. Wright,
60, died Wednesday, January 02, 2013 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was
the former owner/operator of Robert Wright Trucking Co. He earned an Associate of
Applied Science Degree in Computer Networking Technology from Mountain Empire
Community College and was currently an instructor and technician at the Center
for Computer Information Technology at the college. He was a member of Phi Beta
Kappa Honor Society at the college.
He is survived by his wife of 40
years, Reta Wright of Norton, VA; his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Nick
Houghton of Norton, VA; his mother, Peggy Shupe; his daughter dog, Harley and his grand dogs, Jazmine
and Roscoe and a half-sister, Loma Jean Moore.
Graveside committal services will
be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday at the Hill Family Cemetery on Powell River
Road with Rev. Phillip Bates officiating. Family and friends will meet at the
