AGNES COOKE

NORTON, VA - Agnes Cooke, 94, died Thursday, May 30, 2013 at her home.  She was born to the late Jim and Martha (Edens) Owens, and was the widow of Carroll Cooke.  Also preceding her in death were her son, Roger Cooke, her sisters:  Beatrice Hubbard and Mildred Sturgill, and her brothers:  Percy and Hagamon Owens.

She is survived by her son, Doyle Cooke, and his wife, Peggy, and her daughters:  Caroleen Gardner and Janie Williams, all of Norton; her grandchildren and their spouses: Jennifer & Melvin Oakes, Steven and Kim Williams, Rosemary and Michael Garrison, Penny and Freddie Greear, and Teresa and Dennis McCray; her great grandchildren:  Candice and Jonathan Bolling, Tyger Oakes, Christian Williams, and Sierra Greear; two great grandchildren, Eden and Evelyn Bolling; and her brother, Jack Owens.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM Friday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be at 1 PM Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Benny Boles and the Reverend Darrell Bolling officiating.  Burial will follow at the Isom Cemetery on Powell River Road near Norton.


JUNE B. FREEMAN

WISE, VA – June B. Freeman, age 81, our Mother, was called home on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 from Indian Path Hospital, Kingsport, TN. June was a hard working woman, managed a service station for many years, an amazing singer, but most of all she was the rock and backbone of our family.  To say she will be missed would be understated and although this world seems empty now that she’s gone, the heavens feel full. We love you now and forever our dear mother, may your blessings forever reign.

June was a daughter of the late Doyle and Ola (Collier) Watts. In addition to parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Teresa Gale Freeman.

Surviving are sons; James Emory Freeman, Jr. and wife, Annette, Michael Steven Freeman and wife, Roxanne, Richard Allen Freeman and wife, Gwen, and Jeffrey Doyle Freeman; a daughter, Lora Lee Abate and husband Don; 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 great, great grandchild; a sister, Judy Egan and her husband, Jay; and a brother, Greg Watts and  his wife, Joyce.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Joe Dearry officiating.  Interment will be at 11:00 AM Sunday in Laurel Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at 10:30 AM Sunday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.


GEORGIA AGNES SEXTON

NORTON, VA - Georgia Agnes Sexton, 87, died Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the home of her daughter in York, SC.  She was a daughter of Andy and Cordie (Gibson) Kokaska, and was the widow of Lonnie Bascom Sexton.  She was also preceded in death by her second mother, Nettie Williams, her son, Eddie Sexton, a sister, Mary Dearry, and two brothers:  Jake Kokaska and Elmer Williams.  Georgia was a member of the Tacoma Holiness Christian Church of God. 

Surviving are three daughters (and their spouses):  Geraldine (Frank) Carr, York, SC, Alice (Junior) Malone, Coeburn, VA, and Bonnie (Carrol) Sexton, Hampton, VA; a son Gordon Sexton, Norton, VA, 17 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM Sunday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Monday at the Tacoma Holiness Christian Church of God, with the Reverend Joe Dearry and the Reverend Mike Davis officiating.  Burial will follow in the Bruce’s Siding Cemetery in Coeburn, VA.


ANNA RUTH STANLEY

LEBANON, VA – Anna Ruth Stanley, 83, went to be with the Lord on May 22, 2013 exactly 10 years and 1 day from the passing of her beloved husband of 56 years, the Rev. Adam Mondo Stanley. Anna Ruth spent the last seven years in Lebanon, VA but most of her life was in Pound, VA. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents Bob & Lizzie Strouth and 8 brothers and sisters.

Left to cherish her memories are her son, Larry Stanley and wife, Rebecca of Pound, VA and their children, Talitha Sarhan and husband Michael and daughter, Aurelia of Bristow, VA; Twana Stanley of Pound, VA, Talena Epling U.S. Navy stationed in Beaufort, S.C. and husband Shaun and unborn baby; her daughter, Sherry Venda Johnson and husband, Vernon of Lebanon, VA and their children, Vernon Dean Johnson, Jr. and children, Karlee, Alex and Carissa of Lebanon, VA, Tamantha Johnson and husband, Daniel, and children, Zachary, Michael, Brandon and Lilyana of Kingsport, TN; a sister, Grace Stanley and brothers, Clyde, Jerry and Bobby Gene of Pound, VA and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Friday, May 24, 2013 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, VA. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Darrell Naff, Pastor of Green Valley Baptist Church, Lebanon, VA officiating. Committal and procession will leave the funeral home at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 25 for interment at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, VA. Serving as pallbearers will be Vernon, Vernon Dean, and Alex Johnson, Larry Stanley and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Ferbie’s Chapel Church in Pound, VA or to Green Valley Baptist Church in Lebanon, VA or to Alzheimer’s Association or Gideons.


RUBY EDWARDS

NORTON, VA – Ruby Edwards, 81, died Saturday, May 18, 2013 in Heritage Hall Healthcare, Big Stone Gap, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Cecil Edwards; her parents, John & Helen Leho; a brother, John Leho, Jr. and a sister, Viola Hickson. She was a former employee of Norton Elementary School as a teacher’s aide and later at the Wise Clinic as a Black Lung Case Worker.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Alex and Diana Edwards of St. Paul, VA.; 2 granddaughters, Chandra and Abigail Edwards; and a sister, Lillian Lovell of Brunswick, GA.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Tuesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Tuesday in the funeral home chapel. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home by 10:30 AM Wednesday to travel in procession to the cemetery.


ALICE FAYE STIDHAM

WISE, VA – Alice Faye Stidham, 65, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 9, 2013. Alice was a member of the Guest River Pentecostal Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Georgia Stapleton, and a sister, Sarah Stapleton.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years, William Stidham of Wise, VA; one sister, Ada Stapleton Mullins of Pound, VA; four brothers, Wendell Stapleton and Palmer Stapleton, both of Union City, Ind., Jurrel Stapleton of Seymour, TN, Wright Stapleton of Norton, VA; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Darrell Bolling officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery.


ROGER D. WAMPLER

NORTON, VA – Roger D. Wampler, 65, died Monday, May 6, 2013 at his home in Norton. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Jane Mullins Wampler and his parents, Robert and Ruble Wampler, Sr. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA Local 8939.

Surviving are his daughter, Melissa Wampler; a son, Travis Wampler and his wife Wendi; 3 brothers, Robert “Dicky” Wampler, Jr. and his wife Sherry, Tony Wampler and Rita, Michael Wampler and Teresa; one sister, Roberta “Butch” Smith and her husband James; 3 precious grandchildren, Aceshia Wampler, Coty Wampler and Kailey Ren Wampler; 3 sister-in-laws. Shevollia Harris, Tammy Robinson, Angelena Jackson and her husband Ronnie; 3 brother-in-laws, Kendall Mullins and his wife Ella, Zachary Mullins and his wife Glenna, and Doug Harris; several beloved nieces and nephews and loving companions “Rowdy” and “Sophie.”

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 PM Wednesday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Darrell Bolling officiating.
