LANN ALVIN MALESKY, SR.

NORTON, VA - The abundant life of Lann Alvin Malesky, Sr., 78, ended Sunday, April 22, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Davis of Norton, VA, sons Lann Alvin Malesky, Jr. of Asheville, NC, Lowell Alan Malesky and wife Katy of Fairfax, VA, three grandchildren, Kendall, Kelsey, and Joshua, sister-in-law Jenny Snapp (Kevin) of Big Stone Gap, VA as well as a host of close family friends whose kindnesses he did not take for granted.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Gaynelle Malesky and former wife, Gara Vinson Malesky.

Born in Fairmont, WV, Lann spent his childhood in several locations as his father was relocated while working for the Federal Bureau of Mines. These places included Norton, VA, Vincennes, IN, and Barbourville, KY. After graduating from The Webb School, a then all-boys boarding school in Bell Buckle, TN, Lann studied engineering at Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega (ATO). He then attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he received a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning. Following graduation, he joined the United States Peace Corps and was stationed in Cameroon, West Africa where he met his first wife, Gara.

Upon returning to the States, Lann and Gara began a family in Charlotte, NC while Lann worked as a City Planner for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Planning Commission. He then began his career with the Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer where he held positions of increasing responsibility in Algeria, Switzerland, Mali, Turkey, Bahrain, Brazil, and Washington, DC. While working in Washington, he represented the Department of State by attending The National War College, a school in the National Defense University housed on the campus of Fort McNair in Washington, DC. Through extensive research and travel, Lann composed The U.S. Embassy in Transition: The Foreign Service’s Support of the AID Buildup in the Sahel which examines the Foreign Service’s roll in the transitional African areas between the Sahara and the Sudanian Savanna.

Following his retirement from the State Department in 1994, Lann was active in his church, Fairfax Presbyterian, participated in Midlife Men on a Mission which traveled to Honduras annually for mission work, worked as a consultant for both non-profits and government contracting agencies, and taught as a substitute teacher. Lann moved once again to Norton, VA in 2006 where he became the volunteer Executive Director of The Food Bank of Wise County, Inc. which he helped grow. Always civic minded, Lann was willing to assist in the community in a variety of ways, serving most recently as Norton’s representative on the Lonesome Pine Regional Library Board of Directors and the Norton Social Services Board. Anyone who ever talked to him in the past months left the conversation knowing two things: 1.) he wished the 2016 election results had been different and 2.) he wished for the Regional Library to receive adequate funding as he advocated for the importance of providing spaces which foster ideas and offer services and opportunity to all residents of Southwestern Virginia, especially those for whom financial hardships limit access to the internet.

Lann published non-fiction pieces in the Virginia Cavalcade, Military History, Indiana Basketball History Magazine, and Presbyterians Today. A member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Norton, Lann believed in and fought for equality.  He loved travel, seeking out the obscure, and making sense of puzzles. He collected stamps, was an avid photographer, enjoyed the company of his feline companions, loved his family, good food, and found comfort in the fellowship of his many friends.

A memorial service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Norton, VA on Sunday, May 6 at 4 p.m. The Rev. Preston Mitchell and Rev. Lee Kidd will officiate the service. A reception will follow directly afterwards in the church’s fellowship hall. A private burial will be held on Monday, May 7 at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Deacon Fund, c/o All Saints Episcopal Church; P.O. Box 227; Norton, VA 24273 and/or The Food Bank of Wise Co. Inc.; P.O. Box 2977; Wise, VA 24293. Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home of Norton is serving the Malesky family.
