FREDERICK J. MCCONNELL

NORTON, VA - Frederick J. McConnell,79, went to be with his LORD on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at Johnson City Medical Center.  Fred was the son of the late D.C. and Margie McConnell, Jr.  He was a 1959 graduate of John I. Burton High School and a member of the 1958 season football Division 8 championship football team.  In 2018 he will be inducted, posthumously, into the Burton High School Hall of Fame.  He retired in 2004 from Northern Virginia where he was superintendent of paving for several asphalt paving companies.  He recently worked for PTI after returning home to Norton. Fred was an avid Washington Redskins fan from the 1950’s on.  A sister, Pat Simpler, preceded him in death.

Surviving him are his wife of 35 years, Faye McConnell, his children (and spouses): Teresa (Charlie) Martin, Lexington, KY, Cindy (Scott) Hubbard, Pound, VA, and Jason (Jessica) McConnell, Norton, VA; his step-children:  Diana Walls, Texas, and Johnnie (Stephanie) Walls, Waldorf, MD; his two grandchildren, Braylon and Harper McConnell, 7 step grandchildren and 5 step- great grandchildren, his brother-in-law, Jim Simpler, and several cousins, nieces and nephews, and a host of lifelong friends.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Saturday, June 30, at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  A funeral service will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Randy Reagan officiating.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society at cancer.org.


HAROLD LEON BRICKEY, SR.

WISE, VA – Harold Leon Brickey, Sr., 79, died Monday, June 25, 2018 at Norton Community Hospital following a long illness.  Harold was the last of his generation of thirteen children born to Daniel and Mary Bessie (Crider) Brickey.  A retired roofing contractor, he was a member of the Guest River Pentecostal Church.  He was an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by a son, Harold Leon Brickey, Jr. and a daughter, Sharon Kay Brickey, and two grandchildren, Josh Brickey and Jessica Miller.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Cooke Brickey, a daughter, Trish Miller, Norton, VA, two sons, Carl Brickey, Wise, VA, and James Brickey, Norton.  There are 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. 

The family will receive friends at 2 PM Wednesday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  A funeral service will be at 3 PM in the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Darrell Bolling and the Reverend Earnest Duncan officiating.  Burial follows in the Huff-Brummitte Cemetery on Thacker’s Branch.

NORMA BURCHETTE

NORTON, VA – Norma Burchette, 90, died Sunday, June 24, 2018, at her residence. She worked with her husband at Burchette Photography in Norton. She was a member of Norton United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Morris Burchette of Norton, Va.; two sons, Keith Burchette of Norton, Va., Alan Burchette and his wife Vanessa of Danville, Va.; two granddaughters, Rachael Burchette, Sandy Witt and her husband Paul; two great grandchildren, Trinity Witt and Austin Witt.

Memorial service will be conducted at 11 AM Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton with Rev. Ken Taylor officiating.

THOMAS EDWARD RUSSELL

DUNBAR, VA - Thomas Edward Russell, 75, died Thursday, June 21, 2018 at his home in the Dunbar community.

He was a son of Clarence and Ophrey. Tom was a retired Westmoreland Coal Company miner and a member of the UMWA.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dawn Michelle Short.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Oakes Russell, a son Marshall Keith Russell and his wife Carolyn, his step children:  Robert Oakes, Jennifer Oakes, Lisa Milanese, and Joseph Oakes.  His grandchildren are:  Elizabeth Charity Short, Stephanie Morris, Michaela Russell, Josie Morris, Madison Stidham, Samantha Morris, Bailey Milanese, Annabelle Oakes, and Hudson Oakes.

The family will receive friends at 11:30 AM Monday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  A funeral service will be at 1 PM in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Tony Nunley officiating.  Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.


RANDALL WILES

NORTON, VA – Clayton Randall Wiles, 77, died Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at his home. He was an Elder at the Laurel Grove Community Church. Randall was an avid farmer, hunter and trout fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Marion Wiles and a brother, Monty L. Wiles.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Loretta Wiles of Norton, Va.; two sons, Brian Wiles, Rayburn Wiles and his wife Lou, all of Norton, Va.; three daughters, Sonja McCoy and her husband Johnny of Fort Blackmore, Va., Marion Wiles of Weber City, Va., Gayla Johnson and her husband Dave of Wise, Va.; ten grandchildren, Little Bit, Dakota, Aaron, Savannah, Cameron, Anthony, Zachary, Chelsea, Miranda and Keirsten; three great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Friday, June 15, 2018 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Raymond Sturgill officiating. Burial will follow in the Robinette Cemetery.


SHERRY ATWOOD

COEBURN, VA – Sherry Baker Atwood, 63, died Saturday, June 9, 2018, at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tn. She was a member of Mary’s Chapel Church in Coeburn. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jeff Baker.

She is survived by her son, Brandon Atwood and his wife Angie of Coeburn, Va.; two grandchildren, Avery Ann Atwood and William Russell Atwood, both of Coeburn, Va.; a dear friend, Gene Phillips of Coeburn, Va.; a brother, Randy Baker of Lynchburg, Va.; a special niece, Debbie Browning, and three nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens with Pastor Marty Puckett officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:30 am Thursday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton to travel in procession to the cemetery.
