NANCY SCOTT JONES

NORTON, VA - Nancy Scott Jones passed peacefully Friday, Nov. 2, 2018 at Oakmont at Gordon Park in Bristol, VA. Her family surrounded her with love while each amazing care giver at Oakmont took his/her time to truly love on her and say goodbye in each one?s individual way. The finest of care was always provided by these dedicated individuals and Nancy?s family is forever grateful.

Nancy was born in Pardee, VA on April 21, 1937 to Roy E Scott and Gusteva Wallen Scott. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Milford “Scotty” Scott, sister Dovie Scott Muncy Sowards, infant brother Bobby Lee Scott, niece Monica Scott and great niece Taylor Scott.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bill Jones, daughters Gena Prince (Bill) and Beverly McGee (Matt), grandchildren Will Prince (Stacy), Andrew Prince (Nora) and Erin Nolin Baker (Randle) and great grandchildren Alexis and Emma. She is also survived by her sister-in-la"w, Cacilia Scott; niece, Teresa Sellers and nephews Russell Muncy (Linda Sue), Steve Muncy (Debby), Herb Scott and Joe Scott and several great nieces and nephews.

Nancy held many leadership positions in SWVA. She was the manager of the Mountain Empire Credit Bureau, Vice President of Appalachian Traditions, and she also served on the tourism committee of the Wise County Chamber of Commerce. She often led her fellow committee members in the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, the Doc Boggs Festival, the Crooked Road; Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail and the Heart of Appalachia while raising a family and working at least a couple of jobs at a time.

Nancy was best known for her musical talents and her innate ability to entertain family and friends. One of the famous family stories includes her, at age 5, learning to play her father?s guitar while it was hanging on the wall. She wasn?t allowed to touch it for fear of carelessness, so she learned to play it while it hung on the wall. This was merely a glimpse into her grit, determination and stubbornness when it came to music. When her dad realized her talent, he hand-made her a small guitar, so that by age six she was singing and playing in church with her sister, Dovie, and her cousins Ruble, Lou, Betty and Judy Donnells.

Music became and remained the foundation for the rest of her life, and she even met her husband at church where he saw her playing and performing. He asked her to teach him how to play his favorite song at the time, “I Overlooked an Orchid While Searching for a Rose”, so he could spend time with her and get to know her better. She played acoustic guitar, bass guitar and piano, but her true love was singing. She sang lead well, but she was even better at grabbing a harmony part with anyone, anytime.

Nancy and Bill performed locally as “The Mountainaires” and as “BJ and Nan and The American Brand” for decades. They also performed as a duo all over the southeastern United States for more than fifty years. While recording in Nashville in the early 70?s, Nancy had a national “Pick of the Month” recording, “Vengeance is Mine”, which Bill wrote for her. Nancy was also a songwriter who sang harmonies both live and in the studio for various country and gospel artists.

A celebration of life is planned at The Country Cabin in Norton, Va, Sunday, November 11, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 PM where the family will receive friends and share refreshments. The family also welcomes friends to speak or tell stories on Nancy?s behalf. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Alzheimer?s Association.

Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home is serving the Jones family.
