TAMMY THOMPSON

WISE, VA - Tamala (Tammy) Ann Thompson, 55, of Wise passed away unexpectedly at her home on Christmas Eve 2018.  She had a passion for politics and music, and she adored her nieces and nephews.  Tammy was preceded in death by her parents, George and Willie Jean Thompson, a brother, Terry Thompson, and her brother-in-law, George Bailey.

Left behind to cherish their memories of her are her sisters:  Norma Pillow (Earl), Debi Carter (Dave), Brenda Bailey, and Tina Carter (Benny Bray); her brothers: David Thompson (Angelina), and  Bo Thompson (Trish); her nieces and nephews: Angelia and Sydney Colinger (Todd), Jason Bailey, D.J. and Madilyn Carter (Ashley Meade), Samantha Bevins and  Lincoln Bentley (Justin), Lucas Bray, Nate, Gracie, and Gabe Thompson, her step-father, Henry Purciful, and her longtime friend, Joe Powers.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Friday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Her funeral service will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel.  Burial with her family present will be Saturday at the Laurel Grove Cemetery.


CREED COLLIER ABSHER

NORTON, VA - Creed Collier Absher, 90, passed away December 18, 2018 at Norton Community Hospital.   Born March 15, 1928 in Norton, VA, he was a resident of Norton most of his life.  He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was a school teacher at the former J.J. Kelly High School in Wise.  He enjoyed gardening, cooking and playing golf.  After retiring from teaching Creed was a dedicated caregiver to his mother in her later years.

Creed was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Absher, Sr. and Ruby Collier Absher, a brother, Charles Absher, Jr. and sister, Ella Barron Cox.  He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

At his request he was cremated and there will be no public service.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Laurels and to his personal caregiver, Linda Clark, a special thanks.

JANIE DIANNE HALL HENSLEY

NORTON, VA – Janie Dianne Hall Hensley, 67, died Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.  Born to the late Thomas “Sydney” Hall, Sr. and Ruble Chester Hall, she was a lifelong resident of the Norton, Virginia area.  She was the Executive Assistant with Rish Equipment for over 34 years.  Janie was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters:  Tom Hall, Robert Hall, Ricky Hall, Adam Hall, and her infant siblings:  Jewell Ann Hall, Betty Sue Hall, and Donnie Hall.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Jack Hensley, her daughters:  Julie Bruty and her husband, Tim, Mount Carmel, TN, and Amy Hall and Ernie Rose, Norton, VA; her siblings and their spouses:  Annette and Bruce Fields of Norton, David and Reba Hall, Bristol, TN, and Ronnie Hall and Nella Spriggs of Norton; her granddaughter, Sydney Skeen and grandson, Eli Rose, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Her funeral service will be at 7 PM Friday in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Buddy McGlothlin officiating.  Family and friends will gather Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, by 10:30 AM at the funeral home, where they then will travel in procession to the Laurel Grove Cemetery for graveside rites and burial.


GAIL BLEVINS BUCHANAN

NORTON, VA – Gail Dean Buchanan, 79, died Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Norton Community Hospital.  Born in Norton, VA, she was the daughter of Joseph Charles Blevins and Lucille Moore Blevins, and was the widow of David Buchanan, Jr.  Gail was a retired secretary for the Norton Elementary School after 27 years of service, with an additional 6 years of clerical service to the City of Norton. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Norton, VA. 

Surviving are her children and their spouses, daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Reed, and spouse Mike, Knoxville, TN and son, David Joseph “Joe” Buchanan, and spouse Dora Jo, St. Paul, VA; a brother, Jody Blevins, Coeburn, VA, her friend and companion, Darrel Jackson of Norton. Her  grandchildren are:  M. Cain Reed, Jon David Reed, Maggie Brooke Buchanan, David Joseph “DJ” Buchanan II, step grandchildren, Taylor Salyers, Shawn Long, and Megan Long.  Her great grandchildren are:  Hollis Owen Reed and William Jackson Reed.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Monday, December 17 at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Her funeral service will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Kelly Fleming officiating.  Honorary pallbearers will include:  Cain Reed, Jon David Reed, DJ Buchanan, Jody Blevins, and Ronald Collins.


EVELYN WILLIAMS BLEDSOE

NORTON, VA – Evelyn Joletta Williams Bledsoe, 89, passed away in the comfort of her home on Sunday, December 9, 2018. Born in Pardee, VA, Evelyn was the daughter of Beulah and Clarence Williams.  While Evelyn’s husband of 68 years, “Big John” made a living for his family building houses, Evelyn specialized in making houses in to homes.  She was a true model and blueprint of what a mother, wife, grandmother and mother-in-law should be.  Through unwavering love, strength, care, and undying dedication to her family, Evelyn molded and influenced five generations of her own family and impacted the live of numerous others.  She is now in her eternal home with those who preceded her in death, which include her late husband, John J. Bledsoe, son, William H. Bledsoe, infant daughter, Donna Michelle Bledsoe, a grandson, Jake Bledsoe, a great grandson, Leo James Bledsoe, her parents, Beulah and Clarence Williams, and her brother, Douglas Williams.

She is survived by her daughter Kay (Bobby) Kash, John D. Bledsoe and Tracey Buckles, her daughter-in-law, Loretta Bledsoe, her grandchildren:  Karen Allen, Robbie Kash, Rhonda Saint, Shaun Lockheart, Sarah Bledsoe, John Henry Bledsoe; her great grandchildren:  Hayden Allen, Isabella Allen, Tristin Kash, Hunter Kash, Asten Kash, Cypress Saint, Kowan Saint, and Lillie Evelyn Faith Sargent; and a special friend, Nina Honaker.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Thursday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  Her funeral service will be at 7 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Jim Wells officiating.  Family and friends will gather by 11:30 AM Friday at the funeral home where they will then depart in procession to the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for graveside rites and burial.


COLLYER MICHAEL REESE

NORTON, VA - Collyer Michael Reese, 62, died Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport, TN.  Born in Cleveland, OH, he was a son of the late Willie and Dorothy Ross Reese.  He was a retired martial arts instructor and formerly a Walmart associate.

Mike is survived by his wife, Juanita Hunter Reese, a daughter, Tiffany Hunter, a son, Collyer Michael Hunter-Reese, Jr. and his wife Alyssa, three grandchildren:  Melquan Joshua Glenn, Nelayah Monique Hunter, and Deandre-Mykael Joshua Hunter, and 11 brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends at 11 AM Saturday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.  His funeral service will be at 12:00 Noon Saturday in the funeral home chapel, with Pastors Wayne Hager, Darrell Bolling, and Kevin Wampler officiating.


VIRGINIA MARSHALL

NORTON, VA – Swanza Virginia Marshall, 94, died Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Wise, VA.  Virginia was born August 9, 1924 to the late John A. and Mary Pet Steele Johnson in Kingsport, TN, and raised in the Dorchester, Virginia community.  She was the widow of Julius Marshall.  The last survivor of her generation, she was preceded in death by her sisters:  Pauline Parker, Rhea Ward, Violet Baxter, Ella Mae Collins, Joyce Monroe, Patsy Caine, and Velma Mellon.  Mrs. Marshall was a former resident of Canton, OH where she worked many years in the textile industry.

Surviving are her nieces and caregiver, Myra Marshall and Deb (Tom) Davis; brothers-in-law: Kenneth (Nina) Marshall, Robert Marshall, and Frank Marshall; several nieces and nephews, including Carolyn Bowman of Kingsport, TN.  Her church family at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Norton includes, Pastor Gwen Owens, Margie Mabe, Val Childress, and the late Susan Fore, who were always there for her.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Heritage Hall in Wise, VA for their love and care.

Friends may call at 12 noon Friday, December 7, at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, VA.  Her funeral service will be at 1 PM Friday in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Gwen Owens officiating.  Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
